Video of the Day: February 28, 2008

funkdoctorspock | February 28, 2008

2/28/08

Terrace Talk would like to introduce the Manchester United Video of the Day. We look for clips of famous United moments or clips, and pair it with a little background and context.

The first submission is from the 2005 matchup between Manchester United and Arsenal at Highbury. The meetings between these two teams have always been testy affairs and a simple edge through intimidation before the match could tilt the tables in favor of one of these Premiership giants.

On The Cusp of History

RobsonLegend | February 27, 2008

We stand on the cusp of history at Old Trafford this season. As this is typed, Cristiano Ronaldo is on the verge of breaking George Best’s club record of 32 goals in a season scored from the winger position.

EPL Post Match: Newcastle United vs. Manchester United

Torque | February 23, 2008

After a crushing victory over the Magpies in January, the Red Devils started the game convinced that they could repeat that amazing result. Earlier in the day the Gunners were held to a draw after a late equalizer by James McFadden at St. Andrew’s Stadium. The fact that Arsenal slipped was most likely the boost of confidence the Reds needed.

Newcastle United vs. Manchester United: Preview

opm |

I love St. James’ Park. As a fan, you have moments that you will never forget, and many of those have come at Tyneside. “Are you Sunderland in disguise?” was the call from the away fans five years ago as United hammered Newcastle for six goals. What I remember about that day was the absolute raw aggression of the team and the constant hunger to rack up the score. Manchester United weren’t playing against a team that afternoon, but against shadows, while they turned flowing attacks into spectacular goals.

Champions League Preview: Lyon vs. Manchester United

opm |

UEFA sure has a way of wetting your appetite and then pulling your fix away from you the moment your football addiction has hit. A fairly easy group stage for United, left me on the edge of my seat and dreaming of past successes, legends of old and new, and what could be around the corner. Speaking of legends, Ryan Giggs will look to celebrate his 100th appearance in the Champions League with a goal, which should be quite fitting so close to the 50th anniversary of Munich. The knock-out rounds have begun, so let’s look at hopefully the first of many opponents United will face.

Michael Carrick - The Fifth Wheel?

Torque |

Michael Carrick’s recent form had me thinking that SIr Alex Ferguson might not have made a mistake signing him afterall. I have even begun to like him. In particular, his assist on Nani’s goal on Saturday was pure class, and has turned me from one of his detractors, to a solid supporter. But I’ll return to this later.

FA Cup View From the Stands: United vs. Arsenal

opm | February 17, 2008

In the build up to the greatly heralded match that pinned the Premiership’s two best teams, you would never have been able to tell from Arsenal’s performance that it was in that elite category. I have looked for reasons why Arsenal was so poor, and why United were so fantastic, and I can only throw my arms in the arm in defeat. Relative to last week’s devastating blow at Old Trafford to the Blues, I thought this season was beginning to slip form our grip due to inconsistency, mediocrity and the general misconception that we’re destined to win the league because of how easily we were able to run through teams in the previous campaign. I’ve been looking for tenacity from this side and yesterday, it was finally on display.

Wild Apache

Torque | February 10, 2008

Carlos Tevez plays every match as if he’s trying to escape the ghetto. His way is football from the street, as if each game is a trial game, a need to make his mark.

Manchester United vs. Manchester City: Preview

opm |

Two weeks after disposing of Tottenham quite confidently, some pundits predicted that United would come up with a similar performance against Spurs a second time, while others bought into the Ramos revolution. However, there were major differences between the two teams last weekend. Tottenham were quite active in the transfer market, while United spent more time suppressing rumors than putting pen to paper on the last week of January. The sides that met were far different on the second occasion, with Spurs adding Jonathan Woodgate and Alan Hutton to their side, allowing Huddlestone (who looks far less ridiculous at Whiteheart Lane) to move from central defense to the heart of the midfield. While Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes looked dominant in midweek against Portsmouth, you could only assume that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted a more defensive minded midfielder next to Scholes and replaced Carrick with Hargreaves. Luckily it was Carlos Tevez that saved us.
