Viva Ronaldo

opm | March 31, 2008

I had just walked into the pub about a half hour before United faced Villa looking for a solid omelette and a spot of tea before I went into my pints of Sam Adams. As I went through the door a mate of mine immediately commented on how Arsenal had come back to draw with Bolton. I replied with a quick “Doesn’t matter, they were done last week.” Of course my arrogance was quickly slammed into my face by the Arsenal stool barons next to me minutes later. While party lines were drawn, allegiances made, and bets placed all of this was forgotten for the next two hours, as United with Ronaldo at the helm took over. Every fan in the bar, from the plane Mexican bringing clean glasses, to the staunch Arsenal loyalists could not help but feel grateful that they had had a chance to watch the master class put on display, cleansing our Premiership palette like a smooth glass of wine.

Looking at Alan Shearer’s career I can’t help but look at his multiple seasons of dominance and hope that we are only seeing the beginning of the same from Ronaldo (except WITH the trophies). In fact, BBC’s Match of the Day highlighted his audacious goal against Villa, and Shearer himself was quick to throw his ego aside and reason that if not for Ronaldo being a winger, he might be looking at his own Premiership record for most goals in a season fall in the way George Best’s record has fallen. Indeed the statistics support his inference:

No matter what United do this season, it is shockingly impressive to be even having a conversation about Cristiano Ronaldo at 23 years old breaking Alan Shearer’s records. He might not have cemented his legendary status amongst most United fans, but all of us feel privileged to see him perform his magic, weaving our dreams into reality every week. Bravo Ronaldo! Viva Ronaldo!

The truly amazing and scary thing about Ronaldo this season

The truly amazing and scary thing about Ronaldo this season is that he has been scoring all these goals as a wing player!!!

The match against Villa truly showed that if he focuses on balancing his scoring instinct with his passing instinct, no team has a chance against United.

With 6 more matches left, Ronaldo has a great chance of finishing with 30+ league goals which would truly be a remarkable accomplishment and further bringing up his name as a United legend.

Great work. A nice, short article. Well, to beat Shearer's record,

Great work. A nice, short article.

Well, to beat Shearer’s record, Ronaldo has to score 9 goals in 6 matches. Considering the quality of his play lately, he could get get more that 9 goals, if he keeps it up of course.

given the fact that we have some very tough fixtures coming up, it wont be too easy for him to score 9.

He has a habit of doing exceptionally well against small, ill prepared teams.

Whether or not he will get the 9 goals i dunno but given what he has done this season, you wouldnt rule it out.

He scores so many but he also misses loads of chances.

Even Dixie Dean needed 3 on the last day of the season to hit 60. It could happen.
