Until a couple of weeks ago all I could say about Gerard Pique was that he had been playing in the reserves and waiting for his big chance. In eight and a half months he has made four Premier League appearances and played in two Champions League matches. But when Nemanja Vidic got injured, Pique stepped up, ready to prove that he’s worth a place in the starting eleven. It was a crucial time of the season when Sir Alex Ferguson handed Gerard a place in the starting line-up. He played in the second leg of UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Roma and in the derby against Arsenal. Pique has played spotless 180 minutes and deserves credit for those great displays.

In a recent interview, when asked if he was going to Barcelona to prove something, Gerard stated that he has nothing to prove as people in Barcelona remember very well who he is and that the Barcaelona clash wouldn’t have changed people’s opinion about him, and on top of that he still has a lot of work to do to improve his game.

Pique said a few words about his life at United. It looks like he’s very happy at Old Trafford after he claimed that there aren’t many other clubs that can offer him anything better. The only thing he needs is playing time. Gerard also talked about his relationship with his teammates. He said he loves communicating with the likes of Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra and Edwin van der Sar as these are the players responsible for the atmosphere in the dressing room and on the training grounds.

This lad really deserves more chances to play in the starting eleven as he has talent, he’s been working hard this season, training alongside Rio, Vida, O’Shea, players from which he has learned a lot from and which are an example for him. He had a great season at Zaragoza last year, but he was denied the chance to prove himself at Old Trafford and I think Fergie has been unfair. While it is true, he had rather disappointing performance in November against Bolton, his destiny with United shouldn’t be completely based on one appearance.

He played particularly well against Roma, putting on a fine performance, playing calmly and with confidence, under the guidance of Rio Ferdinand. It was exactly the type of performance I was expecting from him, a performance that earned him a place in the next match against Arsenal. I think he was a bit scared in that match as he wasn’t quite confident in front of Arsenal’s attacking force. Still Pique managed to play well and not make any huge mistakes which could have given Arsenal the three points. Again Rio proved to be a good teacher, guiding Pique throughout the game. In the end everything went well and Pique celebrated an awesome match with the rest of the team, a match that proved to be one of the greatest matches of his career.
