Everyone is sulky sometimes. A lot of people always mention that Berbatov is sulky, moody and disruptive and it makes me laugh to be honest. I personally believe Berbatov is nowhere near his best, we haven’t seen all he has. For four years now I have rated him as a footballing genious if given the chance to grow. No disrespect to Spurs, but they hardly set the world alight in the past 2 seasons. Berba was left up front alone, waiting for the kind of service he needs to score. Given Spurs erratic form week by week it must have been frustrating for him. When your team mates are simply not in the same class as you, then it would drive you to insanity. Despite not getting the service he requires, he has still scored 23 goals in the past two seasons and 11 assists last year. In a team that scored just 66% of the goals United did!

Put him in a rampant United team, tearing up the pitch scaring the opposition half to death and spraying the ball all over the pitch and Berbatov will be in heaven! He’ll think he has died and been despatched to paradise. With feelings like this flowing through the team as it does every year, Berba will have no need to be stressed and go off sulking.

Lou Macari, talking to The Sun this week made some very good observations. I’ve robbed the quotes off The Sun, in true Scouse fashion and now I have accredited them with these quotes I’m sure they’ll be cool.

Macari observed that Dimitar Berbatov will not disrupt dressing room harmony at United. The European and Premier League champions pride themselves on team spirit. It has always been the corner-stone to the 18-year success story Sir Alex Ferguson has forged since his first trophy in 1990.

Last summer Owen Hargreaves, Nani, Anderson and Carlos Tevez were integrated into the senior squad family and the accord saw United to the double. But Tottenham’s Bulgarian hitman has a reputation as a sulker. Berbatov has allegedly been moody at White Hart Lane whilst the controversial switch to Old Trafford seesawed. But now United have landed Fergie’s only major summer target then ex-Red Lou Macari is convinced Berbatov will slip
smoothly into the squad togetherness.

He won’t disrupt things with Sir Alex Ferguson in charge, nor will the long-servers like Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes allow it. They wouldn’t stand for anything that would cause problems to one of the foundations of United’s success. I don’t think Berbatov himself would come in with anything other than full commitment and a desire to get to the very top. He has gone stale at Spurs but this is his big chance and probably his last chance at a major opportunity like this. He’s not going to put that on the line. He won’t get another chance to be a top player at a massive club, so he’ll knuckle down and go along with whatever it is that makes United tick.

Macari believes, however, the 27-year-old will arrive with a burden of expectancy.

It is a huge fee that brings him to Old Trafford and there will be a lot of anticipation. He’s got to deliver. The price will be big and people will question it, but I think he will relish the chance to show he is worth every penny. He doesn’t look the kind who would let anything faze him.

Macari doesn’t believe United’s lack of transfer activity suggests the Reds won’t be challenging again.

I don’t think Sir Alex Ferguson would have been biting his nails about cover at full back or central defence or in midfield, but there may have been concerns about lack of firepower. If Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez stay fit and you get Cristiano Ronaldo back soon then all well and good. But if Rooney or Tevez is injured early on where do you go? That would be a problem.

You can’t afford to take that chance so targeting a striker like Berbatov was right and I don’t think United need any more than that to show they will be challenging again.”The squad is stronger than 1999 and the one major signing would be enough.

‘66 was a great year for English football.
Eric was born.
Hailed as the most influential player of the most influential team in British football, Eric Cantona was the catalyst for some of Manchester United’s greatest successes of the 1990s. With his swagger and a unique termperament, Cantona welcomed the limelight of Old Trafford and quickly became a crowd favorite and as Dimitar Berbatov has pointed out, he never smiled either. Even with his abrupt exit from the greatest stage, his many brilliant goals, are cherished as some of the greatest footballing memories that the Old Trafford faithful have had.

Last night, brought another landmark transfer with the purchase of Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur for a reported 30.75 million pounds. While the exact details of the deal are not fully understood, it is most likely that two thirds of the fee will be paid upfront, and Tottenham agreeing to drop their allegations of tapping-up. In addition, Frazier Campbell will be going in the reverse direction for a season-long loan.

While Gary Pallister and numerous pundits have compared Berbatov to Eric “The King” Cantona, I’d argue that for all of their similarities, Berbatov will play a significantly different role. Cantona had an incredible deft touch and the ability to hit the unexpected shot. Paired with amazing vision and the most gifted passing most have seen from a striker, his ability to act as catalyst, was as important as his ability to provide a perfect finish. His romanticizing of what the sport should be, only helped grow the legions of fans that supported the sometimes contentious misfit. The analogies are only natural to United’s new Bulgarian striker, down to the misbehaving temperament.

The differences however will show in the way the two players are used within the United system. While Cantona was placed as a supporting striker, often linking the midfield and forward, his role was far more marauding then what may end up being Berbatov’s place. United in the current system already have a player that plays this same role in the form of Wayne Rooney. Instead, Ferguson will be looking to Berbatov to give the attack a more structured form and lead the line as opposed to traveling in between the midfielders and the defense. His hold-up play, his pouching ability and his aerial presence will all be assets to be called upon.

While some make the comparison, the current squad has plenty of players that can play the supporting striker role, and few that can lead the line. With an array of similar skills, Berbatov may have to live up to the greatness of Cantona and display similar wonders as The King was able to perform in 1992 when Brian McClair and Mark Hughes were off form. In the same way, the real player to benefit from this acquisition may be Wayne Rooney. His faltering and inconsistent form has puzzled many fans who expected a far more prolific goal scorer. Berbatov showed that he could bring in his fellow striker and provided plenty of chances for Robbie Keane. The same may occur for Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney, bringing them into a more centralized force and diminishing the reliance on Cristiano Ronaldo. In the back of Ferguson’s mind, he may know that the structure that won the two greatest trophies in 2008, is not sustainable.

The Flowers of Manchester. It leaves a lump in my throat, every time I sing it. I’m sure it’s the same for multitude of Manchester United supporters across the world.

February 5th, 1958

On a surprisingly warm and sunny day in Belgrade, Manchester United took the field to play against the mighty Red Star Belgrade. It was their second leg Quarter final of the European Cup.

It was a typical battle of attacking football and robust tackles, a young team was willing their bodies and minds to greater heights. This was Manchester United, and this was what they were famous for. People flocked to see United play. Back in 1958, it was a refreshing change for the public, who were torn apart by lengthy wars. With emphasis on the exuberance of youth, Manchester United took England by storm. Always willing to play attacking soccer, with a carefree attitude, they raised the profile of the game in the home of football. They were the Busby Babes. They played romantic football.

“Play to the situation”, they knew not that phrase!!! It was the same brand of attacking football, home or away. They believed in expressing themselves on the football pitch, and they were fully supported by Sir Matt Busby, the manager. They were a sight to behold. On the 1st February, United travelled to Highbury to play against Arsenal, in what turned out to be their last match in England. Within no time, United had raced to a 3-0 lead. Pat Rice, the current assistant manager at Arsenal, was an on looker who was swayed on that day by the Babes. Incredibly, in what is still considered as the greatest match played at Highbury according to Rice, Arsenal scored 3 goals in 3 crazy second half minutes to tie the match at 3-3, only for United to win it 5-4.

Back to Belgrade, and the match kicked off. Barely 90 Seconds on the clock, Dennis Viollet scored to put United 1-0 up. In what turned out to be a dominating half, United raced to a 3-0 lead, thanks to a young Bobby Charlton double before the break.

This extra-ordinary goal glut in an away European away match, was against a side boasting the best goal keeper in the whole of Europe that day, in Meara. Incredibly, Manchester United did not sit back and defend, and went for the kill. Red Star scored a quick opener after the break and the game became an enthralling spectacle for the 52,000 odd home supporters.

But United never seem to do it the easy way. One penalty and several anxious moments later, Red Star Belgrade fought back to 3-3 with minutes remaining on the clock. But United saw the game off with some tigerish tackles and ferocious defending from Foulkes, Byrnes and Edwards. It ended 3 all, and United were through to the semi finals with a 5-4 aggregate, by virtue of the 2-1 win at Old Trafford in the first leg. AC Milan awaited them in the semi-finals.

A jubliant Manchester United team started it’s journey to England on a chartered plane on Thursday, 6th. Little did the team know the fate that was awaiting them. Little did Manchester know about the woe that was about to strike them. While Manchester was getting ready to welcome it’s young heroes, the Gods were getting ready to welcome the Busby babes to play for Heaven’s football team.

The Aborted Attempts and the Crash

The Airspeed Ambassador plane belonging to the British European Airways was ready to bear the team back to Manchester, where they were scheduled to play against Wolverampton Wanderers on the weekend. As fate would have it, the ever affable winger Johnny Berry, who had lost his place in the first team to the precociously talented young Welsh wizard of yesteryear Ken Morgans, had lost his passport.

After an hour’s delay because of the passport fiasco, the plane started its fateful sojourn towards Manchester. There were 44 passengers on board, players, coaching staff and journalists included. Legendary English goal keeper Frank Swift, was one among them. He was working for News of the World as a journalist covering the match. Old timers swear that Big Frankie’s hands were so big that he could catch the ball as if a normal person could catch a cricket ball. Swift’s career was cruelly cut short by World War II, and thus the keeper widely regarded as the finest of all time English goal keepers, even better than the legendary Gordon Banks had only a handful of wartime appearances for England and 20 odd full fledged appearances.

The plane stopped for a routine fuel stop at Munich. Cruelly, the plane never left Munich. The unthinkable happened. Under questionable weather conditions, two attempts to take off, already ended in failure and the airplane was forced to return to the terminal. Safety measures in those times were pretty rudimentary, and nothing compared to the present conditions. Though the players wanted to be in Manchester as soon as possible, there was resigned feeling that the night might be spent at Munich. There were even telegraphs sent by the United contingent to the near and dear ones in Manchester, about the impending bad weather.

The runway of the Reim airport in Munich, was inundated with snow. It was late afternoon and just when it appeared that the team was going to stay overnight at Munich, Thaine, the captain of Airspeed Ambassador, after consulting with engineers, decided to try a final attempt to take off. And it was a terrifying try. A try which would change the club forever. As the phrase “The blood of the martyr is the seed of the Church” goes, that try would change Manchester United forever. They were no longer a club, who provided relief to the war ravaged people by playing high octane football. That single try, changed the club with a carefree and joyous attitude towards life in general to the one synonymous with hope, hard work and perseverance.

Before the third attempt for the take off was made at around 3 in the afternoon, Captain James Thaine and co-pilot Kenneth Rayment made sure that there was no ice present in the wings of the airplane. This was a known hazard on that day. German Engineers were contacted and advice was taken regarding the take off. Normally when ice starts melting, the combination of ice and the liquid water becomes a mild paste like liquid, which often mixes with other minerals and dirt and becomes dark in colour. This is called as “slush”.

The runway was filled with slush, and the effect of slush on aircrafts like the Airspeed Ambassador was unknown at that time. The excess slush on the aircraft’s wheel can have a negative effect during take off. This would be the cause of the demise of a precociously talented football team. The plane shot down the runway hitting full throttle, but it could not take off as it entered the slush hit part of the runway, as it lost speed and veered away.

The highly religious Catholic Liam Whelan, was heard shouting “If this is death, then I’m ready for it.” How right those prophetic words were? The airplane, as it lost speed, crashed the airport fence and hit an unoccupied house. As the house caught fire, the starboard side of the plane hit a wooden hut.

As fate would have it, the hut had a truck filled with fuel and tyres parked inside. The truck exploded as the plane hit the truck. Before any help could arrive, 21 lives were lost. Seven of them players, and eight journalists. Fate, had its last laugh. The best team in England was brutally torn apart by one swift and sadistic swish of fate’s blade. The dead players included Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam Whelan. The journalists who died on the scene included Alf Clarke, Don Davies, George Follows, Tom Jackson, Archie Ledbrooke, Henry Rose, Eric Thompson, and the legendary Frank Swift.

What happened after that, a mixture of miracles, heroism in face of diversity and the sheer agony of having to live the life without so many close friends for the survivors. The newly signed “World’s most expensive keeper” former Doncaster Rovers player Harry Gregg, was more than a hero on that fateful day. Gregg had suffered only bruises and he was thrown out of the plane. Gregg raced back to the plane, as he remembered there was a little girl Vesna Lukic, and her mother, Vera on the plane.

After he had hauled back both the mother and the daughter to safety, he raced back to save more people. He saved the lives of young players like Bobby Charlton, Dennis Viollet, and Jackie Blanchflower. He saw Sir Matt Busby lying there, with his legs pointing haphazardly towards the wrong directions. He slowly hauled the hapless United manager to safety.

Bill Foulkes, was another lucky survivor. The plane had broken almost under his chair. As a result of it, Foulkes escaped without any injury. Apparently, the only injury he suffered was a blow to his head by his own whiskey bottle. In his own accounts, the first instinct that he knew was to run far away from the plane. As he had reached about 50 paces, he realised that the plane wasn’t going to blow to pieces.

He raced back to help Gregg save some of the survivors. Young Bobby Charlton had passed out on the floor, with a head injury and concussion. Johnny Berry, a severely injured Jackie Blanchflower, Albert Scanlon, Dennis Violett and Ray Wood were the other survivors. After the search had been called off, a full five hours later, a couple of German journalists found Kenny Morgans buried deep underneath the plane debris and rescued him. The other survivors included a couple of photographers and the only journalist of the lot, Frank Taylor.

The full horror of the tragedy did not strike Foulkes till he visited the survivors the next day in the hospital. He made an enquiry where the others were, and promptly told that no one else survived.

While back home in Manchester, the newspapers ran the story of the crash. This was going to be one long day. Particularly heart wrecking is the account given by Nobby Stiles. This soon to be United legend was a 15 year old apprentice player in the United youth ranks at the time of the tragedy. He vividly recalls the day with terror and fear when he read the news about the tragedy and how he hoped that it was a sick joke by Chronicle. But it was so not to be.

The Heroic Big Dunc

Special mention has to be given to Duncan Edwards, or otherwise called the “Big Dunc”. Arguably or for the old timers of football, unarguably the best footballer Great Britain has ever produced, The Big Dunc was destined for great things, no, amazing things.

There are people who insist if Munich had not happened, it would have been Big Dunc, instead of Bobby Moore lifting the World Cup trophy in 66. Dudley born Duncan, joined Manchester United as a 16 year old amateur. In his first two seasons, he played for the regular Man Utd XI in the league and FA Cup, as well as in Youth Cup competitions, where he helped United win the cup for three seasons. Along the way, he set records for the youngest player to appear in the Football League, and the youngest England International player, broken only by the precocious Michael Owen. Along with Dennis Viollet, and Jackie Blanchflower, Duncan Edwards was the future generation of talent at that time.

Alas, but ‘The Big Dunc’ had already played his last match against Red Star Belgrade. Duncan Edwards was injured seriously with multiple leg and rib fractures and severely damaged kidneys. Doctors were sure that he could never play football again, but were fighting to save his life. They knew for any chance of survival, they would need a kidney transplant. In the days of artificial kidneys, he was fitted with one.

But the artificial kidney reduced his blood’s ability to clot and the internal bleeding began. Newspaper reports and the hospital workers of Rechts Der Isar Hospital of that day, swear to this day, that the doctors were amazed at his fight for life, in spite of the odds against him, and the sheer pain of his injuries. This, they said, was a heroic man.

So undying was his optimism, when Jimmy Murphy, United’s assistant manager stepped in to see him, The Big Dunc asked him,

“What time is the kick off against Wolves, Jimmy? I musn’t miss that match”,

reducing Murphy to a heap of tears.

But after a long and painful fight against the injuries and pain, the candle that could never be put out, finally burned bright and ended in a blaze of glory on the 21st of February. Edwards was buried at the Dudley Cemetery five days later, alongside his sister Carol. More than 5,000 people lined the streets of Dudley for his funeral.

His tombstone reads

“A Day of Memory Sad to recall,
Without Farewell He left us all”.

His grave is regularly visited by fans today.

The Show Must Go On

When Jimmy Murphy visited Sir Matt in the hospital, he uttered the famous words,
“Keep the flag flying, Jimmy”.

Then instantly, Jimmy knew that he had a job on his hands. The Football League as it was called those days, and the Football Association had postponed both the league game and the FA cup game for a week. But Murphy knew that he had to put a XI out their on the pitch on February 19 against Sheffield Wednesday for the FA Cup game. Even with the five Reserve team players and two fit enough youth players, he still needed four more players. He looked up the survivor list to see if he can get anybody to play. Unbelievably, Harry Gregg and Bill Foulkes stepped up and took the field.

Murphy signed Ernie Taylor from Blackburn, and Stan Crowther from Aston Villa. Both were able to play for Mancheater United only because FA had given special dispensation to field cup tied players citing special circumstances. Particularly Stan was signed one hour before the Sheffield Wednesday match for 18,000 pounds from Villa. All in all, there were eleven eligible players on the pitch now.

The match programme of the day itself was a poignant one. It had a stirring rallying call from the then United chairman, Harold Hardman. Quoting “The Guardian”, the front of the programme carried a rallying call from the chairman, Harold Hardman:
“An unprecedented blow to British football has touched the hearts of millions,” he wrote. “The road back may be long and hard but, with the memory of those who died at Munich, of their stirring achievements and wonderful sportsmanship ever with us, Manchester United will rise again.”

Jimmy Murphy had left the team line up blank for the match programme. Partly because he realized that he did not know the starting XI to play the match, when the programme was printed. More poignant to the supporters because, it was a sickening reminder of what they were missing, and how much the household names of Man Utd will be missed henceforth.

Roared on by emotion and a very partisan crowd of 60,000, it was a match that United would never have lost. Bill Foulkes, and Harry Gregg took the field to raptures of emotions and tears from the crowd. They ran out 3-0 winners with Bobby Charlton watching from the stands, and Duncan Edwards still fighting for his life then, at the Rechts Der Isar Hospital. That day, belying the rumours that United will fold, they rose like a phoenix. The whole of England watched them, cried with them, and cheered them on, as they stuttered towards survival.

The Rest of the Season

Even though, United won the match, and were running on adrenaline and emotion alone, soon the hard reality would catch up with them. They regularly lost in the league. In fact, they won a single match after the crash. They ended the season in 9th place, before the crash, they were competing with the pace setters Wolverhampton Wanderers coached by Stan Cullis for the title.

United would never be undone though. They were still running on emotion and that saw them beat AC Milan 2-1 at home in the European Cup semi final, but they were thoroughly beated 4-0 on the return leg at Milan. As Bill Foulkes would observe, they had nothing to give anymore. They were drained by all the forces in the field. On the field matches, off the field nightmares, a thread bare squad and the quality of the opposition, everything would make sure that there was no happy ending.

United still made it to the FA Cup finals were they faced Bolton at Wembley. Gregg, Foulkes and Charlton played in the final amidst tears. The whole of England rooted for them. But it wasn’t to be. They were beated 2-0 by Bolton. Thus the season with so much promise for United, ended with so many tears and no trophies. But the club soldiered on.

Sir Matt Busby

Alexander Matthew “Matt” Busby, later Sir Matt Busby, is, was and forever wil be the soul of United. Fittingly, the club opens it gates to “Sir Matt Busby Way”. The affable scot began his playing career at bitter rivals Manchester City and then moved to Liverpool. He captained Liverpool with pride and success.

But soon, his playing days would end because of World War II, and he had signed up for national service in the King’s Liverpool Regiment. Busby would return to management and having been turned down by Liverpool, he took up the job at Manchester United. The journey began then, and he was forever to become the “Soul of Manchester United”.

Even though he was inexperienced, he quickly learned the tricks in the trade, and led United to runner-up spots in the league on four occasions. The crowning glory of his career would come in 1952, when Manchester United, led astutely by Sir Matt and captained by Johnny Carey would win the Championship, while Liverpool watched. Worryingly, the title winning United side had a lot of older players and the age was beginning to show.

While the fans and the country was expecting United to invest heavily in popular league players, Matt Busby showed his true legacy to football. Matt Busby had employed a good scouting system who would often sign young players in the age group of 16-18 and trained them well in the youth team of Manchester United. At that time, this was unheard of. He developed a competitive youth team filled with outstanding talents.

He slowly replaced the older players in the senior team with the talented youngsters. These included players like right-back Bill Foulkes, centre-halves Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones and Jackie Blanchflower, wingers Albert Scanlon and David Pegg and forward Liam Whelan. The team was affectionaly called as the “Busby Babes”. This in turn, helped Busby with a lot of money to spend, which was wisely invested on quality players like Harry Gregg and Tommy Taylor, who was the world’s expensive keeper at the time, signed from Doncaster Rovers.

The 57-58 season, was one full of promise for Busby. He had enrolled the team for the European Cup, and United were contesting for the treble, the Football League title, FA Cup and European Cup. It all ended in tears for Matt Busby. He was so critically wounded in the crash, and being the staunch Catholic he is, he has given the “last rites” two times.

He survived the Crash, and a limping, weak and pale Busby walked around the ground at Wembley, during the FA Cup final that season. He saw United lose 2-0 at Wembley to Bolton. With a lot of prodding from friends and family, Busby took up the job again. Close relatives have given their account on how “Busby felt personally responsible for the death of the team,” as he had enrolled them in Europe.

Most of the team members who survived, had expressed their “criminal guilt” feeling, when they were questioned about their dead team mates, and not having died in the crash. Busby felt this anguish more so often, as he was virtually the father of the team. After thinking about the job on hand, and willing himself to leave an everlasting tribute to heaven’s team that died on that fateful day, Busby decided to carry on.

Quoting his wife:

“I don’t think that the boys who have gone would want you to finish. They would want you to go on.”

Quoting his son Sandy:

“He was still very ill. I used to help him with dressing and getting into bed.

“My dad took time thinking about it and decided to carry on.”

Busby decided to carry on.

The Rise of the Phoenix

Matt Busby, had a huge job on his hands. He took over from Jimmy Murphy the following season. He took over a squad, which was haunted by the painful past, and tried to build a team out of it. It’s incredible to think of what Sir Matt Busby had achieved in his time. The survivors of the crash had to be willed on to continue. The memories of their dead teammates would come back to haunt them time and time again.

But none more troubled than Busby himself. Knowing fully well, that he was the principal reason for United competing in Europe, and being responsible for the travel ordeals, he had to rise above himself and inspire his new team to develop the mentality of winning, again. And, as a father figure, he sought to give the survivors, the faith and belief in life itself.

Slowly, the wounds in the minds of the players would heal, but the scars remained. A rejuvenated Busby realised that the only way he could do justice to the team of 1958, was to build another side to glory. Driven by that thought, Busby willed himself to work towards that goal.

By then, Matt Busby had been appointed the manager of Scotland, albeit temporarily. He would give Denis Law his debut during his stint as Scotland manager. He would eventually go on to buy Denis Law for a British record fee of 115,000 pounds from Torino. This would prove to be a crucial signing, as Denis Law, would go on to become an Old Trafford legend, and would be called as “The King of Stretford End.”

Busby made shrewd signings like Albert Quixall and Denis Law, and along with the Munich survivors Harry Gregg, Bobby Charlton and Bill Foulkes, they would go on to form the backbone of the team. Busby would go on to successfully rebuild the team and in 1963, the silverware would duly arrive, with Leicester City outclassed in the FA Cup final.

In the same year, another significant signing was made. Bob Bishop, the Manchester United scout, sent a telegram to Matt Busby. It only said, “I think I’ve found you a genius.” George “Simply the” Best, was signed by United in 1963. All of 16 years old, considered by many as the most gifted footballer in the world, George Best would leave an everlasting impact at Manchester United.

Together with Denis Law, and the ever present Bobby Charlton, George Best formed “The Holy Trinity.” Manchester United, driven by them and the astute leadership of Matt Busby, would go on to win the League in 1965 and 1967 as well.

The Pinnacle of Glory

But the crowning glory for Matt Busby would come on May 29th, 1968. On a glorious night at the Wembley Stadium, Manchester United became the first English team to reach and win the European Cup when they beat a very strong Benfica 4-1 in a thrilling match, which went to extra time. Benfica, were one of the most feared teams in that era, boasting players like Eusebio.

The teams cancelled each other out in a cagey and tense first half, and the match exploded into life in the second. Eight minutes into the second half, United took the lead after some clever play from Sadler who swung a glorious cross from the left for Bobby Charlton to head home. United had gone into the match with three up front, with Best, Aston and the young Brian Kidd, all of 19 years old.

Charlton, Sadler and Crerand played midfield and a 4 man defence in Foulkes, Brennan, Dunne and Stiles along with Stepney in goal completed the team. Benfica eventually equalised with 10 minutes to spare, as Eusebio looked for the winner with all his might. Deep in the injury time, Eusebio set on a powerful run and found himself one on one with Stepney who stood his ground and pulled off a magnificient save, saving the match as well. Eusebio stood back and applauded the save!!

The match went into extra time and Manchester United played like a team possessed. In a glorious display of all round football skills, United scored three goals in no time. The hardworking Best, who was subjected to some heavy tackling by the Benfica through out the game, scored the second goal for Manchester United. He dribbled past a defender and rounded the goal keeper before slotting the ball in.

Two years earlier, Best had scored a brilliant hat trick which blew away Benfica. They had learnt their lesson on that day, and were determined to stop Best, with some questionably heavy tackles. After the match, Best admitted that his original intention was to dribble the ball to the goal line and stop the ball, and nod it in with his head into the goal, but stopped from doing so, because the defenders made ground quickly. To even think about such an act, shows the heavenly talent that Best had.

Two more goals went in the first half extra time, with the young Kidd scoring an immaculate header after a game of mini pin ball in the Benfica box, and Charlton rounding off the match in style with an immaculate shot from a fairly tight angle. The night ended in raptures of glory for Matt Busby, the Manchester United team and England who had won the European Cup.

It made a special night for the Munich survivors, who made their peace with their mates in Heaven.

Back in England, they finished a close second to Manchester City losing the crown in the final day of the season, but the European Cup more than made up for the disappointment in the league.

Matt Busby was knighted for his exploits and for the Manchester United supporters, he’ll forever be the affable Sir Matt.

As they say,
“Maradona good. Pele better. George Best.”

And as the banner says:
“Eusebio and I say Kiddo…Kiddo,Kiddo - Wembley’68″

The After Years

Sir Matt Busby retired soon after, and Manchester United struggled to replace Sir Matt. A spate of new managers and players were tried unsuccessfully, but the club was relegated in 1974. By then, there was no Bobby Charlton, Denis Law or George Best.

Wilf McGuinness, Frank O’Farrell, Tommy Dochetry and Dave Sexton all were tried as managers, but could not effectively replace Sir Matt. Eventually, the colorful Ron Atkinson would bring silverware back to the club by winning the FA Cup twice, in 1983 and 1985. He signed outstanding players like “Captain Marvel” Bryan Robson for the cause.

In 1986, after a promising start, the club’s form imploded and Atkinson was replaced by a young manager from Scotland, who had shown considerable promise at Aberdeen guiding them to European trophies.

That man was Alex Ferguson.

The Ferguson Era

Alex Ferguson, lovingly “Fergie” for Man Utd fans, will go on to become the most successful coach in the history of Manchester United. Amazingly, he is still the manager of Manchester United, and in today’s climate of football coaching, such longevity at a club is unheard of, and it will probably never be emulated.

After a suspect three initial years in charge, when Ferguson built his own team, and dismantled the drinking culture at the club, he won his first silverware, The FA Cup in the 1989 season.

First success in Europe after 1968’s historic triumph followed next season, when United beat a Maradona led Barcelona the next season. Soon, the trophy everyone craved for, the English League would arrive at the club in 1992-93 season, a full 26 years after the 1967 season.

Then there was no stopping Manchester United and Fergie. To date, he has won an astonishing 10 League winners medals, 5 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 7 Community Shields, 2 European Cups, 1 Cup Winners Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup, and 1 Inter Continental Cup. All these trophies were won at his time at Manchester United. His exploits with Aberdeen haven’t been taken into account.

All of Ferguson’s team played attacking football and were easy on the eye. He put his faith on youth like Sir Matt and was generously rewarded.

Rock on Fergie. Give us a wave.

1999 Treble and 2008 Double

Even though, Ferguson kept accumulating domestic titles, the Europe is what he craved for. He realised for a club as big as Manchester United, European recognition is a must. With no limitation on player’s nationality anymore, Fergie led United to glory in 1999.

May 26th, 1999, Sir Matt’s Birthday. United faced Bayern Munich, and in one of the most nerve wracking ends to the final, scored 2 injury time goals to overturn a one goal deficit and won the European Cup. The team boasted of exceptionally talented players like Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Peter Schemichel, Paul Scholes, Andy Cole, David Beckham and they performed magnificiently well.

The year 1999 would be a historic year as United won the Treble. An unique achievement, winning the FA Cup, The English League and the European Cup. No team has ever done it before or since.

The 2008 team, came close to doing it. Driven by Cristiano Ronaldo’s 42 goals and wonderful attacking play by Rooney and Tevez, powered on by a strong midfield including Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, and Owen Hargreaves, and protected by a rock solid defence commanded by Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, with astute goal keeping by Edwin Van Der Saar, the team was on course for a treble.

On February 6th, 2008, Manchester United played Manchester City in the English Premier League. Exactly 50 years before, the Munich Air disaster had wiped out half the Manchester United squad. Special dispensation were given to both the teams, and both the teams sported jerseys without sponsors. The jerseys worn by the players were from the ill fated 1958 season.

A minute’s silence was immaculately observed by both sets of supporters, who held the scarves that were given to them before the match. Manchester City surprisingly beat Manchester United, who seemed a little overawed by the occasion. But they would still reserve the best possible tribute for the team of 1958.

They were beaten cruelly by Portsmouth, in the FA Cup quaterfinal, despite dominating the entire match. They would not be denied the glory of success.

Chelsea battled United all the way both in the league and Europe. The league was won on the last day when United beat Wigan, and Chelsea were held by Bolton, and United beat Chelsea on penalties in the European Champions League final in Moscow.

On the 50th year of Munich, the team fittingly gave the perfect tribute to the lost Busby Babes.

As the song goes:
“We’ll keep the Red flag flying high,
Because Man United will never die.”

The club will go on. But we will remember our martyrs.

The next time, we put on our club jerseys and cheer for the team, we are not only cheering for Rooney and Scholes. We are cheering for that team from heaven too, who made the club what they are. We will forever remember them with a little tear on the corner of our eyes, as we joyously support United and will them on to more and more success.

RIP, The Busby babes.

Lest we Forget.

The recent articles about Aaron Ramsey were pointing to United as favorites for signing him. Last week, Cardiff manager Dave Jones spoke in favor of United, saying that a transfer to United would be a perfect foundation for a bright future
“United are the major force in European football, if not the best club in the world, and with the squad of players they have that domination is set to continue for some time to come. I believe Aaron can go there and play a valuable part in that in the future.”

Despite that, Cardiff City’s official site announced today that Ramsey has chosen to transfer to the Emirates Stadium and that the club will focus on completing the deal.
“Cardiff City were informed on Friday morning that Aaron Ramsey’s preferred destination this summer is at Emirates Stadium with Arsenal”

Why would he do that? The first thought that went through my mind was that he doesn’t want to go back to Cardiff. In the contract United offered Ramsey is a clause, which allowed Cardiff City to keep the young lad for another season, on loan. This way Cardiff would have a quality player, only having to pay the wages and receiving a cash infusion from United.

In my opinion, Ramsey did not like this arrangement and chose Arsenal, who did not include the option for him to return to his current club. I guess he was promised plenty of playing time in the first team, or at least the option.

Another reason for him to chose Arsenal would be the fact that the competition for a place in the first XI would be tougher at Old Trafford, than at the Emirates Stadium. At United, Aaron would have had to compete with established players like Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick and Park Ji-Sung and with youngsters Anderson and Nani.

At Arsenal he has a better chance of making the first team , and so the lad is looking to make an immediate impact on his new team. A very good example, in this case, would be Theo Walcott. Though he’s been at the club for a long time (almost three seasons) he has made only 39 appearances last season of Arsenal’s 58 matches - 67% of possible playing time. He has made 11 starts out of 38 Premiership fixtures. Meanwhile Nani, in his first season, played in 40 of United’s 56 matches - 71% of possible playing time. So, I guess he should have thought better.

We lost the chance to sign a great talent, which could have become a wonderful player under the guidance on Sir Alex Ferguson, and his successor. I’m not going to cry over this missed chance, because I’m sure we’ll be able to find other talents, but I feel sorry for the Ramsey that he would not experience being a red. Wenger has the ability of spotting young talent as does Ferguson, and both have the ability to turn them into great players, but he’ll never be part of the biggest team in England.

May 21st - another unforgettable day in my life. It was the day I’ve finished my exams and my mood couldn’t have been better when I came home: CL final in a couple of hours, a couple of hours that seemed an eternity. I could have sworn the time was slowing down. I was very excited and couldn’t find my place. Manchester United playing in the final! I turned on my computer and made a playlist with all of my Untied chants and songs.

Because I don’t like the commentators from our National Television I decided to watch the match over the internet. I regretted this decision later though - ESPN. I found a stream and began watching. The pre-match was rather boring and useless for an United fan, with most pundits talking about Chelsea and how great they were.

ANDREW YATES/AFP/Getty Images

When the players came out I was so proud to see them standing there, ready to fight until the death for the trophy. I felt like I was among them. The atmosphere in the stands was awesome and I was expecting a tense match, with lots of duels, fireworks and numerous goal opportunities. I also imagined United going into the match with only one thought in their minds: win the match and get revenge. And that’s exactly what they did. At least in the first half, United was dominating the game from A to Z. We managed to score quicker that I expected. Wes had a throw in, then a one-two with Scholesy and Wes crossed the ball to the far post. At the end of the cross was Ronaldo, who brilliantly directed the ball in the back of the net with a very nice header. All Cech could do was to stand and stare.

Chelsea hadn’t given up, and at one point Drogba headed the ball across the face of the goal, Rio tried to head it away but, being under pressure from Ballack, he only managed to head it toward his own goal. Van Der Sar proved again that he’s a wonderful keeper keeping the ball out of the net.

Despite being ahead, United were still attacking and pressing, trying to get the second goal. However, luck was on Chelsea’s side this time, narrowly escaping on numerous occassions. At one point, Rooney played an excellent cross-field pass to Ronaldo, who crossed it for Tevez. But Carlos’ powerful header was palmed away by Cech. I really thought we were about to score as the rebound had fallen only as far as Carrick, but his shot was turned round the post for a corner.

As we were getting to the second half I wasn’t expecting anything from Chelsea, but they proved again that they have great deal of experience, and scored in the dieing minutes of the first half.

With Chelsea’s late equalizer I was expecting United to get back into the game and fire up one ore two more goals in the second half and put an end to Grant’s dream of coming out of the duel victorious. Instead, it was Chelsea who dominated the second half and they came very close to taking the lead after Drogba’s curled shot hit the post.

As the first 90 minutes ended up in a draw, they were followed by 30 minutes of extra time and Chelsea had another big chance to take the lead, in injury time when Frank Lampard’s shot hit the crossbar. It was the second time the ball hit the woodwork and I was afraid that they wouldn’t miss if they were given another chance. 7 minutes later Terry managed to deny Giggs’ shot, saving his team from what was supposed to be a certain goal and the winner.

In the 25th minute of extra time, Drogba received a red card for slapping Nemanja Vidic. Ballack and Tevez also were each yellow carded. As the ref was showing the yellow card to Carlos Tevez, John Terry spat at Carlos Tevez, but wasn’t seen by the referee. I think he deserved a red, but that would have unfairly spared him his future embarrassment.

The two extra-time halves ended as the first 90 minutes and we were up to a penalty shoot-out. I hate these shoot-outs so much because of the tension. I think my pulse was around 120, my knees were trembling and hands shaking. I was so damn nervous.

Tevez converted the first penalty calmly, like a true professional. Michael Carrick, the player I have begun to like very much of late, stepped up to take the second penalty kick and I was relieved to see the ball in the back of the net. I could have seen any of these two to miss the kick but I could have never imagined it would be Ronaldo that instead would faulter. The first thought that came through my mind after he missed was: “We’re fucked!”

Hargreaves converted calmly his penalty kick and in a way managed to calm me down. As we all know, the surprise was delivered by Terry, who missed the shot as he slipped across the Russian pitch. What was supposed to be his moment of glory turned into a nightmare. I suppose it was a proper punishment for his earlier behavior.

After that the two new youngsters Nani and Anderson took their chances, our legend Ryan Giggs was the last man to score for United as Edwin Van Der Sar managed to save Anelka’s shot and bring the Champions League trophy back to Old Trafford.

Manchester United – Kings of Europe… again, after 9 years of waiting, what a night it was. We managed to win it again, in a dramatic manner as it happened in 1999. I began dancing, jumping, singing as the players lifted the trophy. What a glorious moment for our team. The happiness on their faces was so contagious.
A wonderful night, a wonderful match, a wonderful trophy. What else could an United fan desire? The match was a bit spoiled by the incident with Drogba and Vidic, but who cares about that? We won and that’s all that matters.
Congratulations to all United fans with this season’s double. With our current squad I expect United to get another treble next season. Happy days for Manchester United and The Republik of Mancunia.

On May 30th, 2007, the Manchester United website confirmed that the club had agreed in principle to sign Anderson from FC Porto for an undisclosed fee, reported to be approximately £18m. On June 29, 2007, he was granted the move was completed on July 2nd, with Anderson signing a five-year contract. The youngster was friends with Portuguese speaking team mates, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, prior to joining the club so it was easier for him to adapt and understand what was going on during the first training sessions.

PAUL ELLIS/AFP/Getty Images

“Everything suggests he is going to be a superstar, a prodigy, as he has undisputable quality,”
said Mario Zagallo, the legendary Brazilian World Cup winning player and manager, when asked about his country’s latest sensation Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira.

The similarities between Anderson and Ronaldihno are not limited to both player’s long hair, silky skills and dazzling footwork. The two stars started their careers as professional footballers at Gremio, and ever since bursting onto the scene Anderson has been compared to Ronaldinho. With Gremio spending the 2005 season in the Brazilian second division, Anderson became famous for his achievements with Brazil’s youth team at international youth tournaments. After helping his national team to the final of the South American U-17 Championships in April 2005, Anderson won the “Adidas Golden Ball” award for his performances at the FIFA U-17 World Cup later in the year.

His career at Gremio was brief, with few first team appearances to his name and all of them coming before his 18th birthday. However, he is remembered for scoring one of the most important goals in the club’s recent history, getting a spectacular solo winner helping his team to promotion back to the top flight with a 1-0 win over Nautico in November 2005.

Word of Anderson’s talent soon reached Europe, and FC Porto beat off stiff competition to bring him to Portugal in January 2006. He made his debut two months later, giving him enough time to make his mark during Porto’s title triumph, and he became one of the Dragons’ most important players in the opening months of the 2006/07 season.

After he was signed by United, there was talk about him being loaned back to a Portuguese side to continue his development, but it didn’t happen and I am sure the staff, as well as the fans, are happy Anderson has been given a chance to prove his worth and shine. His early displays were below expected standards because of an injury he had been carrying and losing summer rest to the Copa America. He also had to face adapting to the Premier League when coming from an inferior league. A good example would be United’s striker Carlos Tevez who scored only one goal during his first season in the Premiership.

Sir Alex Ferguson said that he signed Anderson because he was afraid that, if the kid was able to play for an injury-free season, his price would double. Well done Fergie! I think we would have paid triple if we wouldn’t have signed him last summer considering Anderson tremendous progress this season.

“We’ve been delighted with him and he has proven himself to be a true central midfield player,” Ferguson added, saying “There was an urgency to get him once we’d scouted him, even though he’d broken his leg and had been out for four or five months.”

The fans and the club weren’t the only ones delighted by Anderson’s move from Portugal.

“It was amazing, not just for me but for my family as well,” Anderson said. “As a young boy it was always my dream to play for a big European club. I was lucky enough to do it with Porto and now I am at United. I feel proud to be here and I want to do my best.”</BLOCKQUOTES>
Anderson, though, admits he took his time before joining United because he wanted to continue to build experience at Porto before making the move.

<BLOCKQUOTES>“I heard about United some time ago through my agent but we thought it would be better for me to wait a little bit longer,” he added. “I was doing well at Porto and knew that joining a club like United would bring its own pressure. But when they expressed an interest in me again in the summer I felt it was the right time. Joining United is a dream come true for any footballer in the world.”

Anderson made his competitive debut for Manchester United against Sunderland on September 1, 2007. He was substituted at half time and replaced by Louis Saha. Anderson later went on to make his Champions League debut against Sporting, coming on as a substitute for Ryan Giggs in the 76th minute. He played the full 90 minutes in the Carling Cup match against Coventry City on September 26th, 2007, in a team consisting almost entirely of youth and reserve team players.

Anderson was quick to win the fans over at Old Trafford through his hard working nature and great ability. After bossing around some of the best midfield’s in Europe when playing against Liverpool and Arsenal, he has filled us with great hope of what he will achieve in the future.

However, despite having several powerful shots on target this season, he didn’t manage to find the back of the net, something must be getting on Anderson’s nerves. The fans are also frustrated that Anderson is the only new signing who hasn’t managed to score. But we expect lots of goals and fireworks from him in the future.

On October 6, 2007, Anderson came on for Nemanja Vidić who had suffered a concussion in Manchester United’s home win against Wigan, and put in what was described as his best performance of the season so far. Carlos Queiroz was delighted with the Anderson’s performance. He then made his first Champions League start on October 23, 2007 as he put in a man of the match performance to help United to a 4-2 win over Dynamo Kiev, during which he came very close to scoring his first goal for the club, only to see his second half shot rebound off a post. After Paul Scholes’ recent injury, Ferguson opted for Anderson to fill his boots in the midfield area. He made starts in matches versus Arsenal and Liverpool and was praised by pundits for his performance against Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard.

Despite his age, Anderson is a remarkably complete footballer. With all the skills and flair of the finest Brazilian footballers, he is also quick, powerful and possesses incredibly high energy levels and a tireless work rate. Also he is very robust, a physical quality you don’t often see at Brazilian players. He has expressed a preference for playing in a wide left position, but is becoming increasingly impressive in central midfield, where he has excelled for Porto in the Champions League and, now, for United.

Brazilian World Cup winner and former FIFA World Player of the Year Rivaldo is of a very good opinion towards Anderson’s skills.
“He’s very good, a huge talent, but you need to be patient with him. His development should be controlled, giving him encouragement, but everything done calmly. We’re talking about a youngster who has the qualities to be a great player.”

When looking at his squad and making plans for the future Fergie states:
“I expect Anderson/Possebon to be the favored combination in a couple of years. Possebon looks fantastic, poised, and accomplished - a lot like Michael Carrick but with a much, much higher ceiling. And we know that the sky’s the limit for Anderson. Happy days for our club.”

Indeed it is. With the new signings made last summer United looks like a more complete team than it was last season.

So, I have to say that Anderson has progressed a lot this season, more that any of us expected (well, except Ferguson, maybe) and the future is bright for the young lad. His awesome performances this season were somehow spoiled by the absence of goals, but I’m sure Anderson will work hard on his scoring abilities during this summer preparation. I’m hoping to see him play more next season and follow in Paul Scholes’ footsteps.

Unless You’ve Been Sleeping Under A Rock

Manchester United wrapped-up a rather intense and nail biting conclusion to the English Premier League season, by winning their 17th league title.

There are several celebration clips which have made their way onto Youtube, including the trophy celebration, a picture compilation of the season and trophy presentation and the awards dinner, which occurred during the evening. Most of the players looked absolutely beat. I’m guessing playing 90+ minutes and then drinking copious amounts of bubbly would do that to anyone.

Congratulations to Manchester United Football Club!

Build-up To Moscow

One day left to go before Manchester United and Chelsea square off in the Champions League Final. The final is being staged this year at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia.

This is the first all English final and possible travel issues have been partially averted. Russia requires a visa for entry and require a 45 pound fee to process this visa. It was increased just as Manchester United defeated Barcelona to reach the Finals. The fans have accused Russia and UEFA of a money grab. In response, Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, waved the fee required to obtain a visa between the dates of May 19th and May 23.

In team news, Sir Alex Ferguson has some major decisions to make with regards to who starts and the player subs. One player who could possibly not start for United is Ryan Giggs. There will be quite a few players that won’t get a chance at the big dance. However, the squad unity and professionalism will present little to no discontent.

Injuries sustained by Chelsea’s John Terry (elbow dislocation) and Didier Drogba (twisted knee) will be magically healed in time for the final.

Here are two youtube clips. One of Manchester United’s 07/08 Champions League campaign so far and the other of United’s 98/99 Champions League campaign.

Transfer Season Is Upon Us

Manchester United Chairman, David Gill has announced that funds will be made available for Sir Alex and his staff to bring in players. With needs for another striker and an attacking right back, its assuring to hear the Chairman, and United for that matter not resting on there success.

Transfer Rumours

The football cycle for rumours goes like this. Season begins in August and you have to deal with last minute transfer rumours up until September 1st. Then the winter transfer begins January 1st, and you have to deal with rumours until the end of the month. And then there’s May, when the season wraps up and every team, supporter and media outlet weigh in on what is needed to improve their football clubs. This merges into the summer transfer period which goes right up until the end of August. Here are the latest comings and goings to the club:

1) It seems United are looking for a player to replace Paul Scholes. And he’s a Welshman by the name of <a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Ramsey">Aaron Ramsey, who is currently playing for Cardiff. He can be had for 5 million pounds.

2) Strikers galore are being linked to United. The ones that are being talked about a lot are, Luis Fabiano, Dimitar Berbatov and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Other strikers getting mentioned are Karim Benzema, Michael Owen and Dean Ashton.

3) With United rivals, Manchester City having internal issues, reports are coming out that <a href=“http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/sport/football.html?in_article_id=565775&in_page_id=1779">Micah Richards could be sold. Guess whose at the front of the cue?

4) 2nd place Ligue 1 contenders, Bordeaux are looking into the possibility of buying Mikael Silvetre in hopes of strengthening there side for next year’s Champions League competition.

Supporter Videos

One of the most popular player chants of the season happens to belong to Anderson. His energetic displays, hustle and tremendous potential have captured the hearts of United supporters.

Anderson-son-son
He’s better than Kleberson
Anderson-son-son
He’s our midfield magician
On the left, on the right
to the samba beat tonight,
he is class with a brass,
and he shits on Fabregas!

Coaching Carousel

With the stakes so high not only for staying up in the English Premier League, but securing a European place, the yearly fallout of managers is taking place as the season draws to a close.

Sven Goran Eriksson’s days as being Manchester City’s ex-manager have a 99.99999% chance of happening by the end of the club’s tour of Thailand. Its disgusting really. He improves the team, gets them to the UEFA Cup through fair play and gets City a top 10 finish (8th). They were fighting relegation a season before. It seems the owner’s diluted “big club” dreams has lead to Sven’s departure, with rumours swirling that he’ll end up with Benfica. As a United supporter, I couldn’t be happier seeing a major rival flounder in mediocrity. As a football fan however, I’m bitterly disappointed that football clubs nowadays have become increasingly impatient with managers and player development.

The Special One, Jose Mourinho, will more than likely be managing a club by next season. Having mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Chelsea FC, he has been rumoured to manage just about everywhere. From England to Australia’s National Football Teams, to Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City over the course of the season.
