When the lineups were announced, my initial reaction was to scratch my head and wonder what on earth Sir Alex was thinking. Rooney and Ronaldo relegated to the subs bench. Only one forward starting. Ferdinand declared fit to play in what was surely a big risk. Evra nowhere to be seen. Silvestre starting.

For a 21 year old, Gerard Pique towers over most of his teammates at six foot four inches. He has the ability to be a colossus type of center back, but is not nearly the aggressive ogre you may have imagined. He takes after Rio rather than Vida, Pallister instead of Bruce. This week he may have summon the great performances of his predecessors to not only force United into the semi-finals of the Champions League, but to save his own career.
