Andrew Alexander Cole, better known as Andy Cole to the Old Trafford faithful who watched him throughout the mid 1990’s through the turn of the millennium. Andy Cole, who this month retired from football as the second highest scorer in the Premier League after a career which lasted 19 years, got me back to thinking about that glorious season of ’99 and the fantastic partnership he cooked up with Dwight Yorke. In his time at United he amassed a goliath total of 93 goals in 195 appearances, almost a ratio of a goal every two games. His contribution to the treble winning side of 1999 was legendary; forming what was, without a shadow of doubt, his most productive partnership, with Yorke. The 53 goals scored by that partnership were pivotal in the success of that amazing season, and since, we have not seen a striking partnership grace Old Trafford which has been as successful. Liverpool vs. Manchester United. A game that needs no introduction really, it is the clash between to the two most successful football clubs in England’s history and it’s a game that I want to see United win more than any other. The victor of this match undeniably gets bragging rights and perhaps more importantly, a massive confidence boost that can usually see them winning the next three or four games that follow. When the lineups were announced, my initial reaction was to scratch my head and wonder what on earth Sir Alex was thinking. Rooney and Ronaldo relegated to the subs bench. Only one forward starting. Ferdinand declared fit to play in what was surely a big risk. Evra nowhere to be seen. Silvestre starting.

There were a number of subplots to what would be a great day for the Reds. I was surprised that I hadn’t heard more media hype about Dimitar Berbatov coming to Old Trafford. Usually The Sun would be completely consumed with catalyzing transfer gossip, however it seems that a new manager and the complete dismantling of Arsenal the previous week was enough to qualm any creative rumors. In the build up to the game, I heard more about Juan Ramos’ refusal to open a bottle of red wine if his side lost, than I did about the Bulgarian’s supposed transfer.
