A grand champion sumo wrestler has been banned from the next two tournaments and fined after he was filmed scoring goals and diving in for headers in a charity football match while supposedly injured.
It is the first time such a punishment had been handed out in the sport's 2,000-year history.
Dressed in a "Rooney" England shirt, 23-stone Asashoryu was filmed in his native Mongolia reportedly skipping tackles, making diving headers and scoring off a pass from the former Japanese international Hidetoshi Nakata.
The 26-year-old had been given permission by the Japanese Sumo Association to miss a regional tour last month after his manager submitted a doctor's certificate reporting a damaged elbow ligament and a stress fracture in his back.
Widely considered to be one of sumo's greatest ever stars, Asashoryu was the first Mongolian to attain the highest Yokozuna ranking.
