Arca was dropped following the FA Cup defeat to Cardiff and the captaincy was handed to Austria defender Pogatetz, who wants the job full-time next season, but Southgate said: "I've looked at other sporting teams who do not have one person nominated as captain and, in some cases, it seems to have worked well.
"I think it's more important that you have five or six leaders in your squad who are the tribal elders; who lead the dressing room and set the standards of what's expected.
"We have people in our dressing room who do that, whether they wear the armband or not. We have some excellent professionals whose approach to training and what they do away from the ground is spot on. That's why people like Mark Schwarzer and Stewart Downing have achieved what they have.
"Having a club captain might make things that happen at the club away from match days less complicated. Very often, people look to the captain as an easy get-out and use him to avoid taking responsibility themselves. They assume the captain will sort everything out so they don't have to."

See, this is all good until there is a situation which the captain has to deal with, but because you have no captain, it could cause conflict. This might also cause issues on the pitch, who is gunna toss a coin at the start of the match and talk to the referee?
Having several leaders is a good thing, as well as having several different oppinions but you naturally need a team leader, and if you dont chose one then one will naturally will emerge as the most dominant one.
I think southgate is just trying to avoid making a difficult decision and chosing a new captain instead of rotating between arca and boateng.
This reminds me a bit of arsenal, except they have a captain, who yes is very experienced but imo isnt captain material. Well, not as good as gilberto who is currently seen as not good enough to play. Its confusing.
