This would be my criteria
1. constant performance
2. devotion to the club
3. behavior outside the pitch
I guess we all know United's legends, so I'll give other examples: Raul - Real Madrid, Paolo Maldini - Milan, Oliver Kahn - Byern, Carles Puyol - Barcelona etc.
