SUNDERLAND boss Roy Keane is poised to make a £2m bid for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans when the transfer window re-opens on January 1.
Keane tried to sign Evans in May after the Northern Ireland international completed a loan spell at the Stadium of Light, only for Sir Alex Ferguson to rebuff his advances.
Five months on, Evans finds himself frozen out of the first-team picture at Old Trafford.
His only senior appearance this season came in September's ill-fated Carling Cup defeat to Coventry, and even that lasted just 56 minutes before he was replaced by Michael Carrick.
While fellow former Sunderland loanee, Danny Simpson, has become a regular on the Manchester United substitutes' bench, Evans has stood still.
Sources claim that Ferguson is disappointed at the pace of the 20-year-old's development, alerting a host of Premier League clubs to his possible availability in January.
Keane has already confirmed that he will seek to add two or three new players to his squad when the transfer window re-opens, and Evans is likely to be at the top of his list.
The defender was a key member of Sunderland's Championship-winning squad last season, making 19 appearances after moving to Wearside in January and forming a successful pairing with Nyron Nosworthy.
Evans claimed he would be willing to join the Black Cats on a permanent basis if he was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
