Wes Brown's Manchester United future could be in doubt after the defender rejected a new four-year contract.
The 28-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has been at the club since leaving school.
"He has not agreed anything, which is entirely up to Wes, we feel we have made him a good offer," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
"We've met with his agent. They've rejected our last offer so that is the end of it. We won't be going back."
Brown has been a regular for United this season, filling in for long-term injury victim Gary Neville at right back.
Sir Alex did not say if he would be willing to sell Brown in the transfer window, and admitted he could lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season - but would not be held to ransom.
"It's a possibility. It would be a disappointment," he said.

thats quite disappointing i have to say. He is Manchester united through and through and said before that he wants to stay here for the length of his career and now he is willing to leave.
He is goof but isnt irreplaceable by any means and I cant see him going to a better club at all. He will probably end up at newcastle for the rest of his career and never achieve anything.
