i found manchester to be very friendly. in fact I initially tried to play around with my english accent, but i was received far better when I just played off as a yank. I did get some pull back, particularly with some fucktard bartender on oxford street, but in general being an American and acting different made me an interesting person to be around and it was a snap to approach people and just interact. Most british women in particular aren't used to having guys go up to them and just chat, and the fact that they heard the accent so quickly made them drop their guard pretty quickly.

As for stadiums, there are a ton that are fun, Portsmouth is great as the home fans really show up. I personally, have always wanted to go to the Villa games, but there still isn't anything like being an away supporter at Anfield. The game just means too much. I'd bet the games against Celtic, or Rangers would be a good show if we ever drew them in the CL.
