Thank goodness it is nothing serious. Hopefully he can get some mins played in the near the end of this year.

Manchester United skipper Gary Neville has received some much-needed good news on the injury front after a specialist's examination showed there was no long-term damage to his ankle.


Neville has not played a first team game for United since breaking his right ankle against Bolton in March.

Although it was originally suggested the 32-year-old would have recovered in time to play in last season's FA Cup Final, he was eventually sent for surgery after unexpected complications.

Since then it has been an almost never-ending tale of misery for the long-serving defender.

His comeback was delayed by calf and thigh problems, then on Friday, Ferguson confirmed Neville had been pulled out of a planned outing against Roma in the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow because he was still experiencing pain in his ankle.

It has been a worrying time for the England man, even though Ferguson has always been confident he would return.

Now, Neville has been given the all clear to resume training again next week and could be involved in United's packed Christmas programme.

'I think Gary will be okay,' said Ferguson.

'We sent him back to the specialist but the assessment is very good.

'It was more like a scar tissue problem. We will work on that and get him back to normal training sessions next week.'

Scholes on road to return

Paul Scholes could be back in action by the end of January.

The influential Manchester United midfielder has been out since he suffered cartilage damage in his knee prior to the Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev in the Ukraine two months ago.

Although Anderson's excellent form in central midfield has compensated for Scholes' absence, the 33-year-old is still a major figure in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans for the remainder of the campaign.

And, after visiting a specialist last week, Ferguson is now able to plot a more definitive comeback path for the former England international.

'The report from the specialist is very good,' said the United manager.

'Paul will be starting straightforward running next week and they think he will be training with us, football-wise, in six weeks' time.'

Providing Scholes sticks to his schedule, he could be back in action in time to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on February 2.

More importantly, he will be around when United resume their Champions League quest, with next Friday's draw set to pit them against either Celtic, Fenerbahce, Olympiakos, Schalke or Lyon in the first knock-out round.

Sir Alex Ferguson is reporting a clean bill of health of Sunday's blockbuster showdown with Liverpool at Anfield.

The Manchester United manager's decision to leave most of his senior stars at home this week has paid dividends with Owen Hargreaves now recovered from the calf injury he sustained in the warm-up prior to Saturday's win over Derby.

True but he'll need a few games to get in to the rhythm. So, the sooner he comes the better it would be. He's probably the best RB in England when fit but at the same time I think we should look at other options too. Gary's age might prove to be a hurdle sooner or later.

No Injury Worries except Edwin

United have no new injury worries ahead of Saturday's trip to face West Ham, but Sir Alex Ferguson is taking an enlarged squad to Upton Park in preparation for all eventualities.

At a time of year where sudden sickness is rife, the United manager is taking no risks as his side look for a sixth successive Premier League victory.

"We're taking a big squad down tomorrow for the game with West Ham," Sir Alex told his pre-match press conference. "We're taking 20 players down, keeping them all together because you never know at this time of year.

"Utilising the squad is important. We freshened up the other day by leaving Ryan, Tevez and Anderson out (against Sunderland). Tomorrow we'll make some more changes. Hopefully that brings the right freshness and gets us the right result.

"The confidence as a team is good, the form is good so we're going into the game in the right frame of mind. It's never easy at West Ham, of course. They beat us twice last season so we expect a tough game but in the form we're in we're looking forward to it."

Owen Hargreaves will be among the travelling party for Saturday's match, but goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has not recovered in time to feature.

"Edwin is not fit for tomorrow, he's still out but Tomasz is doing very well," Sir Alex revealed. "He starts training tomorrow and he could be back for Birmingham."

I really want to see Owen Hargreaves play against West Ham. He is so much better then Carrick or Fletcher. Granted the style is dufferent, they bring different things to the game, but Hargreaves is just another class altogether.

Very happy about Edwin getting back on track, although still can't forget the day he had at Anfield. Waiting for Ben Foster to be back and be even better then he was when he played for Watford.
