Talking Who are ya?! - 07-18-2007, 06:53 AM

Thought it'd be fun to see what teams everyone was playing as...

As for myself, I'm playing as Redditch using the July 13th weegie updated db. You may remember Redditch as the team that only escaped relegation from the Conf n/s (now the blue square n/s) because another team went into administration and lost 10 points.

I blame funkdoctor for playing as Leigh RMI and inspiring me to fire this up.

0 budget, in the red, no asst mgr, players who should take up other sports (like darts or lawn bowling), shite facilities, etc etc.

Should be fun.

Luckily I've managed to whore out some friendlies vs larger clubs (citeh, forest, et al) so I should have some coinage when the season starts. (And can bitch at the board to get me some better facilities).

Playing as Nottingham Forest right now. Got consecutive promotions in my first two seasons and am two months into my first premiership season with them. Mid-table but struggling.

I'm bored and I'm trying to get my posts up to 10 so I can see sigs and whatnot.

My current squad with Forest in the Premiership. 3rd year into the game. (2008/2009?)

---------------Heaton----------------

Frechaut--C. Davis--J. Evans--J. Bennett

Seol------Ghali-----B. Watson-----Nano

--------D. Riordan---A. Stokes--------

Bench/squad:
Paul Smith (gk)
Y. Bouchard (gk)*
James Perch (d/m rc)
Markus Heikkinen (dc)
Jesus Turiel (dm)
Kris Commons (AM LC)
William Stanger (AM/F RC)
Alex Baumjohann (AM L/R)
Danny Szetela (Utility)
Antoine Sibierski (AM/F)
Bernardo Romeo (ST)

*Bouchard may be my worst ever purchase in any FM/CM game. I already had two fine keepers in Heaton and Smith, and two promising youth keepers behind them, but Bouchard was free and seemed a little more polished then the others (plus he is french). However, his wages are 800k/year which is far and away the highest in the squad and he has been worse then Heaton and Smith. His physical attributes are poor at best and he is just clearly out of it. Let in 4 against Wigan and I actually subbed him out after the 4th I was so furious. I'll be trying desperately in January to get rid of him. *sigh*

Feel free to critique my team. I'm struggling at the moment, still above the drop zone but if I continue on my current run I'll be there sooner rather than later.

Tactics wise I'm playing direct ball, wingers getting forward, Watson is the AM, Ghali the DM. Backline is deep. Fullbacks stay put mostly. Any help would be appreciated.

Specifically regards to Ben Watson. I'm struggling to get the best out of him. He is a very talented passer of the ball, good technique, etc. For those of you who have used him or know his stats I'd welcome some help. I just haven't managed to get the best out of him in the Premiership. He was good in the Colaship, but he hasn't gone to the next level that I believe he can.

Danke.

Ahhhh Ben Watson surfaces again! I used to use him alot during my days of using Palace. Ok first off i'd say stop playing direct balls. Chances are your players aren't skilled enough to be pinging balls from box to box which is what direct balls usually entail if your defending a corner say. That way you lose posssession easily.

Switch to playing short passes, and have Ben Watson (or any other person who has passing above say 12 or so) play direct balls. I find that keeping the ball is the most important thing at that level, since you need to create more chances cuz your strikers are next to shit. Then get the ball out wide, so have your wingers stay out there and instruct team to play wide.

Have the good tackling midfielders closing down the opposing players that have low concentration, composure and dribbling levels. Do this ESPECIALLY to the two central defenders, as you'll find they are forced to give the ball away when you've closed them down quickly. It helps to have strikers in the mould of Alan Smith (no u won't get him if u try, lol) that can be constantly hounding the defence. You'll get alot of giveaways like that.

In the pre-match setup, check the stats and preferences of opposing players and force them to their weaker feet. eg. choose 'force on left foot' for players that like to use their right. Also put, 'always closing down' on players that have low concentration and low dribblign levels. Hard tackling on the players with strength lower than 14. All these things help when your team doens't have much skill.

Be warned, if you chose closing down all the time against a team with skilled players, you'll get the run around. They'll be much better at pinging the ball around and you'll look like a headless chicken.

Excellent, thanks. I'll give it a go (hopefully tonight, we'll see) and get back to you.

Np. I actually didn't say who i was. I'm using United with the weegie update (all transfers up to July 7th 2007) so i could get a feel for Tevez. Who i have to say isn't that good in the game, or maybe it's just me. He seems to get injured alot and didn't score more than 8 for me last season. Which is just not enough. I don't think i'm gonna take up the 20 mil option on him at the end of next season. Let alone the fact that i got 5 million quid as transfer budget for my second season.....

Anyway, my first season ended trophyless as i was knocked out of the Carling cup early (to Bristol City no less, but i was using my third and second string, still not acceptable), and out of the FA cup to Fulham, again not acceptable for even my second string. Lost the CL final to the Russian Mafia and finished third, behind te fucking Dippers who won the title by 6 points. I don't think i've ever finished as season with United and not won a single trophy. A learning experience to say the least.

So in a surprising turn of events last night, i uninstalled FM from my PC. I realized that i was getting way too worked up over losing in a video game and simply didn't need added stress in my life. I would lose to Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea and literally feel like smashing my monitor against the wall. I made a decision at the start of this year to control my rage and unfortunately i saw it creeping up again and hence made this executive decision. I really hate losing. Let's hope i can tone it down before FM2008 drops....
