Caption: "Presumably that will be the reaction of all Leeds fans who are facing the prospect of Dave Bassett in charge. Dennis Wise is leaving the good ship Leeds for Newcastle United after being offered a place on Kevin Keegan's staff. It couldn't happen to a nicer club..."

MAGPIES SWOOP FOR LEEDS BOSS WISE

Quote:
Leeds manager Dennis Wise will join Newcastle's coaching staff after the two clubs agreed a compensation fee.

The 41-year-old will depart Elland Road on Tuesday after preparing the side for their Coca-Cola League One clash at Southend.

A club statement read: "We have agreed a compensation package with Newcastle for the services of our manager Dennis Wise and he will part company with the club on Tuesday, after completing the preparations for our game at Southend that evening.

"Newcastle had approached us for permission to speak with Dennis on Friday and since then things have happened very quickly.

"We will always be grateful to Dennis for the way he has turned things around at the club on the playing side and he goes with our best wishes for the future.

"We are not prepared to comment on the inevitable speculation that will now follow about who will replace Dennis. That is not the way we do our business at this club.''

Wise has been offered a reported £1million-a-year salary to become Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan's shock first signing since replacing Sam Allardyce as manager on January 16.

Neither Leeds nor Newcastle have confirmed what Wise's role will be at St James' Park, but it has been reported he is to operate as director of football.

Although Wise will prepare Leeds for Tuesday night's clash at Southend, the former Chelsea midfielder is not expected to attend the match.

His departure will stun Leeds fans, who had slowly begun to accept Wise as one of their own following his flying start to the season in Coca-Cola League One.

Leeds chairman Ken Bates, close friend and godfather to one of Wise's children, has already lost former assistant boss Gus Poyet to Tottenham earlier in the campaign and fans will view the manager's departure as a hammer blow to the club's bid to bounce straight back to the Championship.

The former Chelsea chairman convinced Wise he was the right man to lead the fallen Yorkshire giants back to the top flight in October 2006.

Wise and Poyet could not halt Leeds' slide into League One at the end of last season, but made a dream start to the current campaign.

Leeds were hit by a 15-point deduction by the Football League for breaking competition rules on administration, but won their first five matches and are challenging for automatic promotion.

Wise has recently drafted in four new permanent signings at Leeds, who could climb to second place with victory at Southend.

what's great about it is that they were just in that mindset that they would be in the playoffs and go on to win the league and back into the Championship. Now, even their manager has left. it's all too good. I don't think I could have scripted it better.

Jorquera will become famous soon enough

Leeds are extremely unlucky I must say, considering all the things they have been through. I know many members at this board aren't exactly fans of Leeds but things can't get much worser for them.

He was doing very well at Leeds. Promotion is not too far away still. Their form lately hasn't been great but they should get to the play-offs, at least.
