With Boateng unable to hold down a regular place Southgate's planning to skip a skipper at Boro Quote:
See, this is all good until there is a situation which the captain has to deal with, but because you have no captain, it could cause conflict. This might also cause issues on the pitch, who is gunna toss a coin at the start of the match and talk to the referee? Having several leaders is a good thing, as well as having several different oppinions but you naturally need a team leader, and if you dont chose one then one will naturally will emerge as the most dominant one. I think southgate is just trying to avoid making a difficult decision and chosing a new captain instead of rotating between arca and boateng. This reminds me a bit of arsenal, except they have a captain, who yes is very experienced but imo isnt captain material. Well, not as good as gilberto who is currently seen as not good enough to play. Its confusing.

Southgate will walk out on to the pitch and have a chat with the ref himself...
