Rooney Is Under-Performing, Admits Capello

"Wayne Rooney is very important to us," said Capello. "His potential is huge but he can do better.

"In my opinion, his best position is as a central striker, just behind the person who plays up front.

"That way he can play with his face to the goal rather than his back. You need someone more advanced but then have someone who can move around him.

"It is good for Wayne because he knows he must score more goals."

Capello went on to reveal that he has urged the 22-year-old, who has netted just three times in 14 international games, to become 'more selfish'.

"When I saw Rooney in Portugal (at Euro 2004), he played very well. He has to play like he did then," the Italian added.

"I feel the same as Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I have spoken with Rooney maybe three times now. And I've said to him that he is too generous," said the Italian.

"He has been trying to do too much. He needs to play in the best position for him. He needs to be more selfish, otherwise he is tired and not fresh.

"It is important to be fresh near the goal.

rooney is a great team player but i actually agree with capelllo to a certain extent.

I dont want him to be as selfish as RVN but i would love for him to make a few runs for himself and take his chances more.

I appreciate the effort he puts into the team and even when he isnt scoring goals, he is helping the team score goals but i really think we are not seeing all rooney has to offer.

given his talent he could def do with being more selfish!

we all know he's got power and precise accuracy that needs to be harnessed!

of course he is a team member adn contributes alot when he play for utd, but i think we could see alot more goals out of him if he plays right upfront and looks to take on more of the chances himself!

I agree with both of you. Rooney fits perfect into a team.

Capello is right there, Wazza really is too generous at times. He always looks to make some room for the others, comes back into the defense and thus he can't get back forward to try to score. IMO that's the problem. He shouldn't go back defending that often. He and Tevez should stay up there and Ronaldo should be the one defending, 'cause he's the midfielder!

but i also agree with Capello, maybe the word selfish isn't the perfect word, but sometimes he may also go straight with a shoot when he is around 16 yard box or something like that cuz he is still a striker (anyway Wazza is lethal in and out of the box when he finds a good day, world class no more and no less, pure world class ), but i other order of ideeas the lad plays imo a beautiful footbal to watch so a don't have to many things to blame him.

sometimes it frustrates me when people judge Rooney only on numbers an I think he fits in perfectly.
More selfish would be a bit harsh but would really like to se more shots out of the box from him, maybe when he feels like it a free kick or two as well.
