This award had everything to do with Milan winning the CL and we know it. Even more importantly it had more to do with the way United lost to Milan, and the fact that in that second game, Ronnie was nowhere to be found, and Kaka lit us up. I'm sorry but Kaka wins this one. He was tremendous when Milan needed him, and he carried that team more than I've seen a player carry a team since Zidane in 98. Respect

thats actually a pretty good point, Milan depend on Kaka to play well whereas manchester united can make do without ronaldo. Kaka is just to clever and slippery, probably deserved it, but im not sure if he would be able to cope with the rough style of play of EPL as well as ronaldo has.

i also think that media is a big factor when picking a winner for this award. A lot of great players have missed out on it simply because they are perhaps not as hyped up on a world scale as other players.

anyway, maradona has recently came out and said rooney is better than kaka. This ofcourse has nothing to do with the face that maradona is Argentinian and kaka is Brazilian. I remember he also said before messi is better than kaka.

Indeed the Argentine legend says that Manchester Unietd and England star Wayne Rooney has more to offer than the Brazilian - who was crowned World Footballer of the Year at the weekend.

"I don't know too well how the election is done but I think that Rooney is better than Kaka," Maradona explained in El Grafico.

"Milan is a team that depends all the time on Kaka but that doesn't make him the best player in the world."

Maradona also looked ahead to the Fifa Club World Cup which kicks-off in Japan later this month and where his beloved Boca Juniors are favourites, along with Milan, to meet in the final.

"In my opinion Boca has chances to win the Fifa Club Championship. Everyone is talking about Milan, but if Kaka doesn't play well they will be in problems because they depend too much on him," he said.

"I am not scared of Milan, I only want Boca to get to the competition in good physical condition."

Speaking of his current favourites in football - Maradona ruled on who he feels is the pick of his fellow countrymen.

"At the moment the best three Argentinian players are Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Juan Roman Riquelme."

this argument isn't whether one is more talented or better than another. To me this is about who performed better over a period of time, or at specific moments when the camera and I guess the judges were watching. The biggest stage in Europe last year wasn't the CL finals (I didn't even watch it), but rather the CL semi-finals. Now on both those stages Kaka peaked and showed his class. Showing up to the party is half the prize.

yeah - you have to admit ronnie seemed to disappear away from home against the bigger teams in the CL last year - hopefully he can step up to the plate this time round...

Sky Sports | Football | News | Deco - Ronaldo will rule world

Deco - Ronaldo will rule world

Barcelona midfielder Deco has no doubts that Cristiano Ronaldo will become the best player in the world.

Deco is a Portuguese international team-mate of Ronaldo and is convinced that the Manchester United winger has the ability to reach the very top.

Ronaldo finished second in the European Footballer of the Year awards and third in the World Player presentations, with both titles going to Milan star Kaka.

However, Deco feels that the publicity the Brazilian received prior to the ceremonies was a key factor behind him picking up the awards, and that if Ronaldo had been given an equal amount of press attention then the results may well have been different.

Media

"Cristiano Ronaldo will soon be the best player in the world," Deco told O Jogo.

"This year the role of the media was decisive for Kaka.

"I have experienced how the media can alter decisions in 2004 when I finished runner-up to Andrei Shevchenko.

"I am convinced that if I had been at Barcelona at that time then I would have won the award.

"Manchester United is a big club, but the clubs in Spain and Italy work the promotional aspects very well. These are the things which influence the prizes.

Quality

"(Lionel) Messi is a fantastic player but after the year that Cristiano had I do not understand how he came third and not second.

"Cristiano and Messi are both quality and they will be fighting for the prizes over the next few years.

"I believe that Cristiano will not be too upset at missing out, because he knows that he will be No.1 in time."

And how does he deserve it? How many competitions was your so called "deserver" involved in? Kaka's entire squad was rested for every game they played in CL. So what he scored a goal here and a goal there? He didn't do jack squat in Serie A. How did he deserve it?

Ronaldo was involved in three major competitions: CL, BPL, and FA cup. And he did pretty good too especially being discouraged by the away fans throughout the season. Now, that is what is called leading by an example.

How did Messi come out 2nd what did he achieve? If I remember correctly Messi used his hand to score a goal against some team. What is he showing the younger generation?

Now, you may cry about Ronaldo diving which is absolutely absurd. Anyone who runs as fast as Ronaldo, is bound to fall even if there is no contact. This is called imbalance. You shouldn't need to lose a limb to get a foul.

Let's face it people just don't like English. Its a sad fact really. It sickens me. Prejudice dogs. Ronaldo deserved it!
