Default Kaka wins Ballon D'Or, say Italian media

Disappointed, but no surprise really. Seems Kaka's exploits in Champions League were seen more than Ronaldo's exploits in the English Premier League.

If Ronaldo keeps his current form up and United do will again in League Honours and Champions League, he should win it next year.

Quote:
ROME, Nov 24 (Reuters) - AC Milan's Brazil playmaker Kaka has won the 2007 Ballon D'Or, the former European Footballer of the Year award now extended to players in other countries around world, Italian media reported on Saturday.

Corriere della Sera said the Ballon D'Or jury had told the 25-year-old midfielder to prepare for the awards ceremony on Dec. 2.

Kaka joined Milan from Brazilian club Sao Paulo in 2003.

He was the driving force behind their victorious Champions League campaign last season, scoring 10 goals on the way to the final against Liverpool in Athens.

In August, he collected two awards as UEFA's Club Footballer of the Year and Best Forward for last season.

Heh. cant argue though I do somewhat think a bit too much weight is put on his CL performances. I mean neither Kaka nor Milan were overly impressive otherwise and it just seems to me that it shouldnt be enough be getting that much credit. As a winger playing in arguably the toughest league in the world and turning in the performances Ronaldo did throughout long haul of the season, I think he deserves alot more credit.

Playing club football in 2007 [according to soccernet]:

Kaka- 46 games [18 goals, 9 assists]
Directly contributed to 27 team goals.

Ronaldo- 48 games [23 goals, 20 assists]
Directly contributed to 43 team goals.

They play on different position, Kaka (wich means crap in Serbian), plays in the middle, but Ronaldo plays on the right and the left. They have different tasks in the teams, So I can`t compare them, But he did impressed in the Champions League, and Ronadlo was on a lot of presure with signing a new contract, and in that time was tired and not playing very well.

maybe true, but only one of them showed up on a rainy Milan night last April. Unfortunately that's what it takes. If you judge a great player as truly great if they win a CL or a WC, then you have to hold the Golden Ball winners to the same standard or at least weighted heavily.

Default No gong for Ronaldo

Confirmed that Kaka as won the award.

Dada, the more I look at the statistic you provided, the more I think Ronaldo should have won this award.

Quote:
BRAZILIAN Kaka has beaten Cristiano Ronaldo in the race to be European Footballer of the Year.

The AC Milan maestro was the strong favourite to pick up the award after firing the Italians to Champions League success in May.

Manchester United star Ronaldo was named runner up, ahead of Barcelona’s Argentine superstar Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo was pivotal in United winning their ninth Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson last season – picking up both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards.

Kaka, who recently gave his backing to his Portuguese counterpart for the honour, said: “This is very special for me - it culminates an astonishing year.

“I won the Champions League and was the competition's top scorer. That's what made the difference with the others.

"That is the key. You have to play in a winning team."

congrats to kaka but honestly, i think ronaldo is doing a tremendous job at such a very physical league. Defenders are tougher than in other league and it is a more difficult league for skillful players like ronaldo to play in.

hats off to them both, i am sure ronaldo will win his fair share in the next few years

It doesn't matter. The statistics would have to be even more absurd than they currently are for me to pay attention. If you will consider Gerrard, or Scholes at certain parts of their careers as the best players, then you'll realize that it has more to do with the way the player effects the rest of his teamates, rather than just the numbers he puts (tons of basketball analogies here). This award had everything to do with Milan winning the CL and we know it. Even more importantly it had more to do with the way United lost to Milan, and the fact that in that second game, Ronnie was nowhere to be found, and Kaka lit us up. I'm sorry but Kaka wins this one. He was tremendous when Milan needed him, and he carried that team more than I've seen a player carry a team since Zidane in 98. Respect
