Default New boss Capello looks set to give Ferdinand England armband

Man, this would be great imo.

Rio has been the best defender for England for how long now?

Certainly the best in '06, yet JT was named on the dream team where he was clearly outplayed by Rio.

Certainly the best in '02, yet Sol Campbell got all the acclaim. United won in the end though, by capturing his signature, so I won't complain too much.

Anyways, Rio has done so much for the backline over the course of 2 seasons. You can really see that he has a strong command of the backline and assist the keeper in this respect. Yes, the keeper should be doing this, but its always very good to have another brain helping you out.

Anyways, it would be great for England. He's a very popular player and very well respected by them.

My earlier thought process when Capello was rumoured to give the armband to someone else, was to wait. This was before JT was injured by that twat Eboue. Capello needs to get the players settled quickly and he needs to make his own mark on the team after McDaft left his.

Good move if true and it will help Rio in the long run with United I believe. More responsibility is always good for him. He seems to play several levels higher when he does.

Mind you this could all very well be bollocks, especially with the United party organized by one Rio Ferdinand...

New boss Fabio Capello is considering a shock move to make Rio Ferdinand the new England skipper.

The Daily Star has revealed the Italian is a big fan of the Manchester United star and tried to sign him when he was the manager at Roma.

Capello: Keen to make early impact

The traditional Italian philosophy is to have a defneder leading the side, notably the likes of Franco Baresi and Paulo Maldini.

lets throw a party to celebrate

but in all seriousness i think rio will make a good captain. He isnt the most famous like beckham and he isnt an arrogant arsehole like terry. I actually feel terry damages team morale in the same way as henry did with arsenal last year. terry is to controlling and overpowering, it sucks the confidence out of the team mates.

rio had an immense impact on united when he came back from the drugs team. I remember he totally transformed the side. I think he is popular amongst all the players, he seems to be very vocal on the pitch and he doesnt come across as arrogant like terry does.

i wish him the best if this is true and im certain he will live up to it.

i cant wait to see the new look england side.

Rio is a class act. I think a positive about him is that even if he screams at a teammate for an error in judgment he still maintains that mutual respect for them and will be the first to pat him on th back/bum when they make a great play. I agree, he gets along well with all the guys and I think he would make a great England captain regardless of the parties. A big thumbs up from me.

Is it possible for the manager to change captains during his tenure? Just curious to know!

it is possible for a manager to change the captain but it could cause a rift and some unrest if he gets it wrong or if it was unjustified.

is it just me that thinks the Rio is a shite captain? Yes he does a good job roping the lads together, but he doesn't exactly set an example I want for my team. Would you want him to captain United...honestly

Give the arm band to Rooney

Rio probably sets a better example than rooney plus he is experienced. Rooney has struggled many time in the past to control his temper. Flare is a good thing sometimes but i fear rooney will be even more enthusiastic and pationate leading him to be more aggressive.

Rio is very social and popular amongst the players (not that rooney isnt). I think he will be able to set an example on the pitch but lets hope that he doesnt throw too many parties where 100+ slags are invited not including the the WAGS.

if you dont want to keep terry as captain then you are left with owen, gerrard or lampard. Owen is too injured. Lampard is gay (he said he thinks cuducini is good looking). Gerrard might have a good chance but i dont really know if he lives up to the hype surrounding him.

I admit rooney might be a smart choice for the long run but i dont think he will be able to keep his cool and more importantly lead more experienced players.

im passing judgment here and most of what i just said is opinionated but i honestly think of the current crop of players, rio will make the best replacement as captain. Rooney is not quite ripe to be national team captain yet, IMO.

I think Ferdinand would be a good captain, no doubt about that. He is an experienced player who can stay calm and is an regular for England.

However, I think the more important question is whether dropping Terry from captain position is right and how will the team react to that. It seems weird that he will be changing the captain before the team has got together even and Capello has got a chance to get to know the team.

Ferdinand seeks skipper's role

Quote:

Rio Ferdinand has admitted he would 'love' to be named England captain under new manager Fabio Capello.

The Italian will take charge of the national side for the first time in the friendly with Switzerland on 6th February after being named the successor to former boss Steve McClaren.

Capello has admitted he already has a team in his head but has yet to decide on who will captain England at Wembley and Ferdinand has revealed he would be keen to be handed the armband.

But the Manchester United defender could face tough competition from the likes of Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Gary Neville and John Terry - who skippered England under McClaren, but is still recovering from a broken foot.

Opportunity

"Who wouldn't want to be England captain," Ferdinand told Sky Sports News. "I would love to be given the opportunity to be England captain one day.

"But that is not the be all and end all. I just love playing for England, if you are named captain then that is a bonus and it's a great achievement in your life and your career."

David Beckham - who will make his 100th England appearance if selected - has also been widely tipped to be named captain to mark his century of caps, a move Ferdinand would welcome.

"Sentimentally, it's nice," Ferdinand continued. "Not many people get 100 caps in their career and Becks has done that if he gets in for the next game.

Confident

"If he's captain then it would be great, but 100 caps is 100 caps. You've got the 100 caps so I don't think he would be too disheartened if he wasn't given the armband."

Ferdinand is also confident Capello - who has had successful spells in charge of Milan, Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid - will turn around England's flagging fortunes following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

"At every single club that he has been too he has won trophies. That winning mentality is something that we need badly with England," Ferdinand added.

"For a long time now we have been in and around tournaments and not won anything.

"We have got a guy who has got very good winning habits. A lot of us have got winning habits with our clubs, but never managed to get that across with England and that is something we have to change."
although he may not be the most obvious choice for england captain i think he will make a great one. IMO terry cramps his team mates style because he is always screaming his head off at them. It just drains away every last bit of confidence they have.
