Default Brown set to sign - 01-27-2008, 02:59 PM

The centre back, who is out of contract at the end of the season, looked set to call time on his Old Trafford career after United refused to meet his wage demands.

Newcastle and Tottenham were both ready to step in during this transfer window if Sir Alex Ferguson chose to cash in, rather than lose the player for nothing in the summer.

But Fergie always insisted Brown wanted to stay with the champions and has worked hard to reach an agreement with the England international.

He now looks set to sign a new four-year deal worth around £43,000 a week – significantly less than the £50,000 he reportedly snubbed earlier in the season.

The move will bring an end to months of speculation and delight Fergie who has always maintained his intention to hold onto the 28-year-old.

Ironically the debate about Brown’s future has come at a time when he is enjoying arguably his most consistent spell at United.

He has deputised for Gary Neville since March, and has helped make United the meanest defence in the Premier League this season.

Great to see this matter finally resolved.

There must be images rights payments or something else we are not being told for him to take the reduced amount.

Finally. I knew he'll sign it in the end! Glad that he'll be staying!

thats good news. He is a very good player, not as good as vida or nev but he is a solid defender.

like you said Rockyaldo, its either image rights or bonuses for playing/ clean sheets that he wanted.

either that or he preferred staying at united to going newcastle and playing for kevin keegan.

This is great news! He's been doing an amazing job at right back since Neville has been injured. Glad to hear this!

If United has a weakness, it is their lack of depth regarding defenders. Now with Neville coming back soon, looks like more of a strength for this year and years to come. Losing Wes would've hurt real bad. Love that he's staying.

He's been excellent over the years(partnership with Barthez excluded). He filled in for Neville so far this year and done a good job.He is not the first team player but a pretty good rotation-like player and gives depth to Sir Alex's team. It's a good thing he signed a new deal.

Its good if he signs, but I think Wes isn't 100% ideal candidate for ManUtds right side. Of course he is good for substituting, but it doesn't seems that Wes will become a world class player.
