Gerard Pique is the first to admit he'd like to have clocked up more minutes on the pitch this season, but remains confident he'll get his chance to shine.
The 21-year-old has impressed on each of his nine appearances this term which have yielded two goals.
Obstructing his passage to becoming a regular starter, however, are “two of the best centre-backs in the world”. The dynamic duo to which he refers is the fearsome partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
“They complement each other very well,” Pique tells the March issue of Inside United.
“They’re two of the best in the world, both strong in the air and good on the ball. And they show their qualities all the time, not only in games, but every day in training. They’re always striving to improve.
"I know I have to work just as hard, if not harder than they do if I want to play and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
And Pique refuses to get disheartened by the seemingly impossible task of breaking into the best defensive pairing in English football.
“You can look at it both ways,” he reasons. “In one way, it’s frustrating because I’d like to be playing every week, but at the same time I’m learning from two of the best. I’m confident my chance will arrive. So I have no problem with it.”
I think he's a fine young player, playing well (liked most of hie appearances) and maybe the second Vida (he scored 2 goals in 9 matches). The fact that he refused to go on loan last summer inspires us to have faith in him, and I hope he'll be come a key player at United.
too bad it's so difficult to get in the first XI when you're a DC. maybe as a defensive midfielder he could get more chances. otherwise, loaning him wouldn't end, and it's stupid to rotate in that area

Manchester United always score!
I think this situation could be sorted very easily in the offseason.
If Wes Brown still hasn't signed his contract, let him go. I've had enough of the games and his crap displays. And yes I sound a lil hypocrital of Brown, but hear me out.
Pique plays centre back and defensive midfielder. In a emergeny, he could play right back.
Two of those positions are those which Brown play. I'm sure Pique makes significantly less than Brown right now.
So, if Brown doesnt' sign, Pique can be the immediate backup to Rio/Vidic along with O'Shea.
I give the chap credit for being patient. But with the Rossi situation, I'm nervous that he'll want to end up leaving as well. I personally don't want him to go. He's quality.

well Pique already shows his potential to become a good player, but rio and vidic "can not be replace" at the moment.... i think when the time comes, he will show his quality, hope he patient enough to stay n wait...
I have to agree with funkdoctor.....he could very well be used at right back if need be. I know maybe he is not your usual right back in terms of physique, but he is a good overall defender....
We just nee dto be careful we don;t lose him due to lack of matches.....
I think Sir Alex did the right thing by not letting him go, even though he's not gonna be able to outshine vida and rio i'm sure he will be valuble in the years to come
He has played well on loan in Spain when I have seen him in action. Plays a few different positions like centre back, both full backs and even def mid. Hope he doesn't turn out to be another O'Shea, jack of all positions, master of none. Sorry, that is a bit harsh on John but I think you know what I mean. It's great to have him in the squad for when someones injured and he seems happy to do that. United through and through.
