I'd like to pose the question to you lot

i think he has progressed an awful lot since we bought him and although i always thought from day 1 that he would turn out to be great, i never anticipated he would be this great.

the fact that he wants to play in spain is probably the only thing that is stopping him from being a club legend atm. +( his personality)

he is also a bit young and its too early to say because part of being a legend is loyalty and consistency and only time will tell if he can maintain his level or peak early and go downhill from there on.


I think the best way to look at it, is if he was to retire or leave united today, i wouldn't see him as a legend, a great but not a man united legend. He will most likely become a footballing legend because he is just immensely talented but if he doesnt say that he wants to be united and put an end to the rumors constantly surrounding him, he wont become a true united legend.

so in summary, i dont consider him as a legend just yet, but will most probably be considered as one if he stays loyal for at least 5-6 more years. Having said that, i dont doubt that his achievements are remarkable and i dont doubt the ability he possess either. I just doubt his loyalty and sometimes his personality.

Are you referring to his generally arrogant persona on the pitch? If so, what are your thoughts on Eric Cantona, who was quite possibly one of the most arrogant players to ever play the game in the modern era?

I don't think he can be named a legend yet. To be a legend a player has to play well season after season, to show that he's really devoted to the team, to show that he cares more about teams wellbeing that about his paycheck, to be with the team at every match, if not physically than spiritually. Ronaldo still has a long road till he'll become a legend! I wish him good luck!

i knew someone was going to mention this but its not just the arrogance and its not just on the pitch.

yeah no doubt at all eric cantona was arrogant but afaik he doesnt call himself and his goals fabulous and he doesnt push players out the way to score goals. I am also not sure if cantona's arrogance was at times tongue- in cheek or if he was being sincere all the time. There was more to cantona than his arrogance and the performances he put over the years and the impact he has had is what makes him a legend.

Eric cantona also didnt come across as a puff or someone who whines when things dont go his way all the time, inface he was quite the opposite. The one thing i like about ronaldo is that he is tough skinned and can take abuse. However he just dives and cheats a lot (which is ironic given my user name) and imo thats not what a legend does.

I Personally dont like arrogance and i cant say i really liked eric's arrogance either but he is more tolerable because you can see he loves united. There was more to his personality than arrogance. Im sometimes not sure whether or not ronaldo loves united or is trying to put on a show for the scouts.

there are similarities between ronaldo and many other man united legends too but its tough to compare them fairly because ronaldo is still a work in progress. Ie he is a superstar and has the same looks as best, he has the same physique as edwards can take great great free-kicks like beckham (not in the same style and only if you consider becks as a united legend)

All in all i am not saying ronalo needs to be perfect like giggs in every way but i dont think he can be considered as a legend just yet. If he did have giggs' personality and maturity on and off the pitch, then imo he could have been considered as a legend now. In a few years he will be for sure but i dont think he has done enough just yet.

Usually a player is considered a legend after several years,steady and solid performances,displays or something special done in a football match(Maradona against England for example has created a legend about "The hand of God" or another example The Final vs. Bayern Munich in 99(Teddy and Ole)).
Well,Ronaldo is not a legend,but could become as many players of his calibre were called in the later stages of their careers or after retirement.
We cant be the judge as for this problem as for life.There is only one judge:The Time!
It will show us should Ronaldo be a Legend or we will have nothing to remember!It will decide!

Cantona would score a goal and say...look how beautiful that was, Ronaldo scores a goal and he says...look how beautiful I am.

Still these are minor points, afterall Best was as narcissistic as any of them. I personally have to disagree with you. Ronaldo might not sound like a legend this second, but by the end of this season, you won't have a choice but give it to him. He'll break Best's record, he'll win Euro player of the year and world footballer of the year, and you'll have to throw your hands up and say the kid has had two dominant season that rival any of the United legends. You try to name the best seasons of players and he's up there. He's massively important in continuously dominating in the league and if you say, great players are part of great teams, this team would not be able to have won last year in the face of fierce competition without him. Thre are achievements here I don't think you lot are recognizing.

This coming from one of his biggest detractors. Sometimes you just have to face facts. The lad is the shit.

plus, you can't become a legend at 23 (only if you die or smth). and in general only after you retire. I'm not sure Ruud can be named a legend. Raul, Giggs are legends, but they are so few (still playing). Zanetti, Nedved, Del Piero, Maldini, maybe (just) Gerrard
