United are still in line for the treble for the first time since 1999 and face Portsmouth in the FA Cup on Saturday.
They are also aiming to retain their league title and have already booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League this week after beating Lyon.
Ferguson had initially planned to retire in 2002, only to change his mind.
That decision was vindicated as he rebuilt his side, going on to claim last season's Premier League crown.
Ferguson believes it will be time go when he is 69.
"I still have a lot of passion. I'm still happy. But I'm 66 now - maybe three years more, then I'll finish," he told French radio.
Ferguson said it was too soon to mark out his successor. But he added: "I have a great assistant in Carlos Queiroz. He will come into the reckoning.
"But we have owners and a chief executive who will choose the new man in three years' time."
Ufff, on one hand i'm happy to hear he'll stay around a couple of years, but on the other hand i just got sad hearing will be just 3.
Maybe he'll think about it.
I mean a just can't imagine football without him around you know, but hopefully in thease years which he'll still be around we'll win the EPL a couple of times more ( 2, 3 times ) just to past around Lpool's most EPL wins, he promised that if i'm not wrong , after than will be very happy.

Man, I really hope that this last three years that SAF plans to spend at United as a boss will be the greatest ones, as he said that current team is the best he had since he was appointed as manager.
I think Carlos Queiroz would be the best replacement. He has been with us since 2002. No one knows the team better than him, except Sir Alex Ferguson. Also he is a great man to work with.
SAF about Carlos Queiroz:
Quote:
"I spoke to Luis Figo and two or three other Portuguese players and they absolutely raved about Carlos. Hiring him is one of the best decisions I ever made."
Some time ago i read an article somewhere about Queiroz's desire to leave United and become a manager of a team. I just hope he'll be patient and after SAF retires, Carlos Queiroz will become the manager of the best Football team
How about you? Would you like to see the Portuguese as United manager or you would prefer another coach?
im quite sadened by this but i suppose no one can go on forever. I still think he might change his mind again because after devoting your lift to football and being successful, how do you quit?
I was reading in the papers a week ago that they were trying to get fergie to manage GB's olympic football team in 2012 so perhaps retiring in 2011 might give him a chance to do that.
he is 66 and cant keep doing this forever, it is an extremely stressful job after all but i doubt he would still be doing it now if he didnt love it.
Carlos Queiroz is an option if fergie decides to go but i cant imagine he would be able to control the players the way fergie does. We will wait and see i suppose.

first i'll say i'm just fucking crushed. i think we all have psychologically put his retirement thing in the back of our minds ignoring it, like the kid in the back of the class that hopes he'll never get called on. there has never been a greater servant to the club, and there has been not greater manager in world football than sir alex ferguson. 25 years at any club in modern football, and a constant winner across europe throughout, it an absurd record that will never be broken.
as for this england footy talk. it's rubbish. the man is a true scotsman, and no scot would ever be caught dead rooting for the english national side. the british need to wake up. sorry DC
Carlos will be more than an appropriate replacement. it's an excellent opportunity for him and as a united fan, i wewlcome the stability he'd bring.

I said the British olympic side, not the english national side.
Im sure he would rather wear a liverpool shirt than manage england
anyway, fergie is now saying he never set a time.

Sir Alex Ferguson is refusing to put a timescale on any potential retirement, despite reports in the press that he will quit in three years.
The manager was quoted in the UK press as saying “maybe three more years, then I’ll finish”. But he was less committed to a specific date when asked about his intentions at his Friday press briefing at Carrington.
“I’m not putting a time limit on it, it’s impossible,” he told reporters. "You never know what happens in life.
“It’s something I have said for quite a while. If you are fit and healthy and enjoying your job, then who knows? Two, three, maybe four years, it’s difficult to pigeon-hole myself on that one.”
Sir Alex, of course, did plan to retire in 2002, but went back on his decision. The boss admitted that pre-announcing his retirement had an affect on the team, and in February 2002 agreed to stay in charge for at least another three years.
He is currently on a rolling one-year contract, and shows no sign of retiring soon

I think he would rather manage England, than put on a Liverscum shirt.
We all know this was going to happen sooner or later. Thankfully its a bit later. We have an idea when, and we just have to get on with it.
I'm still a lil uneasy with Quieroz as manager. I remember seeing many games with him as manager at Real. If what he's saying, that Real's management interfered with his day to day running of the team was true, I'll give him a pass. But I remember some of his lineups and tactics were iffy. [don't know if that was managements fault or his]
If folks are suggesting Querioz sticks around so Ronaldo does, well that isn't a good enough reason.
Anyways, we have 3 years at least to argue about who the next management will be. More than enough time to enjoy Sir Alex's last years managing the club.
Sir Alex has been one of the most successful managers in football and we are all lucky that he has done it for Manchester United!

Carlos's credentials are unquestionable. There are few managers you can bring in that would bring instant respect and stability and in my mind that should be the goal. The club is so used to having SAF be the rock that they don't know how to operate in a world where the manager isn't a guarantee and is unchallenged. More importantly the fans aren't used to it. If you brought in a Lippi, Scolari, Hiddink, Erickson, Mourinho type, you know those are managers that garner a different level of respect from the footballing world. Carlos happens to garner that same level of respect because he's the hand picked man of SAF and has been there. There is something to be said for being there for as long as he has been.
I'm curious if SAF will take a position on the board?

I think thats a very important point GCMZ. We are so used to having a stubborn rock as our manager, one we know that no matter what he will still be around come next season. I really dont want to lose that feeling when the next guy takes charge. The Lippi/ Scolari/ Hiddink/ Erickson/ Mourinho type wouldnt be my ideal choice in a sense that potential years of service is very important to me and I get the feeling that guys in thir mould come and go. I mean, even if its a guy without the credentials of those among that list, I just want someone who is passionate/enthusiastic about the sport/the club, hard as rocks and one whose loyalty wont be swayed and will stick his nose in when necessary. Its probably obvious my thumb is pointing to the current Sunderland manager but really I just want someone to come in and set up shop for another quarter of a century.

"He will retire some time but I cannot see it in the near future," said the Welsh winger. "He has a hunger for the game and is enjoying it more than ever.
"He is enjoying the way the team plays. His desire is there for all to see as well.

"It is exciting for all of us, like myself, players who have been here a long time," he added.
"You can see their desire every day in training and in games. There is a determination among the group to improve.
"The manager enjoys watching them go through their paces, like we all do.
"While he has mellowed from my days in the youth team, it is plain to everyone here that he is still intent on winning more trophies."
Ferguson has won an unrvialed 18 trophies since arriving at the club in November 1986 from Aberdeen, and is desperate to add three more by the time all is said and done this campaign.
