Default Ronaldo targets world prize - 03-30-2008, 12:10 PM

The Portuguese ace missed on the prize last year finishing third behind Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Milan's Kaka.

Ronaldo has been in scintillating form for United again this season and he has netted a staggering 35 goals in his last 35 games.

The skilful attacker is being tipped to clean up on the awards front in England and Ronaldo admits he is obsessed about being recognised as the best player on the planet.

"The focus is on winning the Champions League and the Premier League. We have the opportunity to do that and we have the players," Ronaldo told the News of the World.

Aim

"But of course it's my aim to be the best in the world. I want to be the best in the world and that's what I work towards every day.

"But only God knows whether I will one day manage to win that prize which is so important for me as a player.

"The United team is playing very well at the moment but we need to be strong in the remaining games of the season and keep our concentration."

Ronaldo, who broke George Best's record for goals from a midfielder in one season with his double against Bolton earlier this month, says he is not bothered about breaking records and is only focused on success with United.

"It is winning the games which is really important," added Ronaldo. "The record doesn't mean much to me.

Records

"Records are not a priority of any sort because anyone who thinks about others comes off badly.

"More than not being obsessed, with records, I don't even think about them.

"I only think about playing well, helping my team to keep a good competitive level and winning.

"Each game will have an impact on the final outcome. It won't decide anything in itself, but the difficult battle that each game presents will help a lot towards the final outcome."

Source
There is no way somebody else could win this seasons prize except Ronaldo. He was absolutely stunning so far and the season it's over yet.

I think that he will win the Ballon D'Or also. Neither Kaka nor Messi can beat Cristiano in the race for this prize.

i think it that is more than deserved if he win this year... Ronaldo Has done fantastic games,is a exceptional player tactic and Technically... if he not win this year, the prize will have no more credibility. GO CR!For me he is already the world's best footballer..

Of course he's the best player in the world this year. This is such a moot point in my mind - who else can possibly hold a candle to the way Ronaldo has been playing?

granted, but if messi comes back and is absolutely brilliant in the last two legs of the CL, I can make as much of a guarantee that he gets it over Ronaldo. End of the day, CL success is absolutely crucial for any candidate. Without him showing up in the CL I wouldn't be shocked if he was ignored.

Traditionally, the world's best player usually comes from the team that wins the CL and in this year's case, the Euro 2008. Although Ronaldo has been unstoppable, I feel that United must win the CL for Ronaldo to be the named the best player (but its all good cuz United is gonna win anyway). He's gonna tear shit up in the Euros too.

(Year / CL winner / FIFA WPOY)

2007 / AC Milan / Kaka (AC Milan)
2006 / Barcelona / Cannavaro (Juventus)
2005 / Liverpool / Ronaldinho (Barcelona)
2004 / Porto / Ronaldinho (Barcelona)
2003 / AC Milan / Zidane (R Madrid)
2002 / Real Madrid / Ronaldo (R Madrid)
2001 / Bayern / Figo (R Madrid)
2000 / R Madrid / Zidane (Juventus)
1999 / Man Urd / Rivaldo (Barcelona)
1998 / R Madrid / Zidane (Juventus)

I found that statement interesting so I looked into the most recent history of winners to determine if that statement holds true. Most recent history would indicate that to be false however considering this was only true on 2 occasions during the last 10 years. Going off this information I dotn see Utd winning the CL as a necessary prerequisite to Ronaldo winning WPOY.

Hmm. I stand corrected. I guess what I am trying to say is if United had won the CL last year instead of AC Milan, Ronaldo would have been POY, instead of Kaka.

If United win the CL this year, bet your mortgage on Ronaldo winning it.

It often comes down to who scores the most goals and is the most prominent figure in the champions league. Last year Kaká scored most and was very influential when Milan won it. This season Ronaldo has been unstoppable and is the joint top scorer along with Messi (in CL), but his outstanding form in th PL will probably win it for him this year.

I'd rather walk alone.
