Default Just like watching Brazil ***SPOILERS*** - 03-31-2008, 02:31 PM

***Please remember that spoilers need to be mentioned in thread titles if a match you want to discuss has been played less than 3 days. Thanks***

Now I had the luxury of watching Match of The Day. And during the post match interview, Wayne Rooney made mention that United's attacking style reminded him of how Brazil use to play in the 80's & 90's.

Which got me thinking. Is United's known fluid attacking reminiscent of Brazil's or is this just a staple of United's history?

All the years that I've seen them play, they have always have an eye to attack. Seasons in which this wasn't key, they were not successful.

Anyways, I never thought that United played a similiar style to that of Brazil.

Thoughts? And a poll.

Quote:
As a child, Wayne Rooney used to watch Brazil's national team in awe of the football they produced. Now, for United, he says he's living a dream playing the same free-flowing, attacking style.

United head to Rome on Tuesday in bouyant mood after sweeping Aston Villa aside 4-0 on Saturday, one of the Reds' best performances this season.

"To be at this club, with the football we play at times, is brilliant," says Rooney. "It's something every player would want to be a part of.

"It's brilliant. Growing up I used to love watching Brazil," he told BBC Sport. "The football we play in this team is similar to the way Brazil play. It's an honour to be in this team."

Rooney himself goes into Tuesday's Champions League quarter final tie in high spirits. His two goals against Villa ended a six-match run without a goal for the Reds with his brace in the deeply impressive victory.

"I was pleased to score, but I know I've been playing well and the main thing is that we've been playing well as a team and winning."

Rooney will be hoping United take the samba style and winning formula with their to Italy. He added: "Roma is going to be a massive game for us and we prepared the right way with the win against Villa."

they're attacking style is absolutely unique and devoid of a typical main striker, which has always been the bread and butter of the brazil team. The only real comparison is the advancing attack minded midfielder and the wing play. We don't have a prolific striker in the mold of any of the great Brazilian forwards.

As for overall style, we absolutely are not the same. We're better. No doubt in my mind that United is better than Brazil Brazil has no defense.

As we don't have a Brazilian striker I would not agree. We have a mixture of English-Argentinian style covered by awesome Portuguese finishing.

I could compare United with the 2002 WC Brazil as I have watched all of their matches. Counter-attacks, excellent timing, fast passes, great skillful players.

May be not Brazilian, but Latin for sure. Its all due to Ronaldo and his creativity,Tevez and his hunger-play,Evra and the others that try to combine some of the best English football with the European (Continental) way of playing and a little of the Argentinian adventurous and risky game. This mixture gives United a ferocity and understanding we expected from it.Yes,yet our style is unique.

I think not.

Brazil have great technical ability from their strikers to their goal keepers. We are not bad ourselves but we are not quite on the same level with the exception of one or two players.

I think both styles rely on team work and some great individual ability too but theyre not quite the same imo. Brazil play with wing backs and although we occasionally do that too, its not quite done to the same extent. They come across as a lot more patient on the ball and are happy to just keep passing the ball, switching it until there is an opening. I think although we do that sometimes, we are a lot more direct

Are we better than them? Its tough to compare but i think the only positions we are stronger are perhaps the defense and the wings.

You want to say that our style is a directed formation, based on the winger threat. But the direct style of play includes particularly a long pass activity, which you see is not as much as the quick passing style played by United.

I would say its more like a high-tempo,quick-fire,short passing formation that sometimes benefits from wingers use of space(it depends of the pitch however) and has clearly a playmaker forward in Ronaldo, which Brazil does not have...

By the all they have defense, they just dont concentrate on that.In Brazil everyone wants to be a striker,so a Brazilian defender is a "not accomplished" forward.(Adriano for example, which could have been a defender today).
