Default Strike Force Heading Ability - 08-04-2007, 01:57 AM

This article made me start thinking about our current strike force and their weaknesses. In particular our difficulties in taking advantage of corners and fouls.

apparently Rooney wants more head (Colleen, you better get on that)

article: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...638386,00.html

Quote:
Wayne Rooney is hoping to score more goals with his head for Manchester United in the forthcoming season.

The 21-year-old netted 23 times last term as United took the Premier League title for the first time since 2003.

During his three-year's at Old Trafford Rooney has notched-up a total of 59 goals for the Red Devils but only one of these has come from a header when he scored the opener in United's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal in January.

"I've been working on my heading a lot in training, just taking crosses and working on my timing," Rooney told The Sun.

"I'm not bad in training but then the games come and...I dunno.

"I've only scored one header for United and I haven't a clue why. But, hopefully I'll get more this year.

"There's more to my game than just scoring. I went 12 games last season without a goal but I set them up for others and we were still winning, so it didn't bother me."

Adding Tevez doesn't exactly help the cause does it? While Ronaldo is fantastic in the air he hasn't been as effective in the air as with Portugal. Saha is great in the air, but he barely plays. Smudge is gone, and it isn't like Nani, owen nor anderson will be growing another foot anytime soon.

Not only do we have one of the ugliest teams, but we might just have one of the shortest!

This is a stat we could use that I haven't seen. The break down of what type of goals players score!

also do we see how often a player loses the ball to opposition (turn-overs to rip a yank term).

yeah i saw that article before, i think that rooney rarely ever gets a ball to header anyway tbh, he usually gets balls on the floor, or he chests it if its high etc.

but i think ronaldo in an excelant header, and so are some of our defenders, ie rio and vidic. theyre the ones that usually take advantage of the set peices.

tbh, i dont think any striker currently in out squad can actually header the ball as well as some other world class strikers, ie drogba. i think we do need a taller striker that can header the ball properly, just for a bit of variation...

Well Saha's not dead, he'll play sometimes but i get waht you mean. In any case, i don't think Nani is that bad at heading. Height doesn't necessarily have much to do with it, Scholesy is one of the best headers in the team.

I'm not worried. Our current style of play is not about running to the end line and swinging a cross in anyways.

i would be concerned if my strikers could not head the ball. that makes your team a one-trick pony so to speak and makes you guys predictable. it happened to us last year when we didn't get much heading from our (bayern) strikers. our play became predictable.

Ummm, we scored 83 goals in the league last year with our 'predictable strikeforce'. That's mroe than anyone else in Europe's top leagues except Ajax (84) and AZ Alkmaar (83).

lol, right...

you guys should be fine b/c you have creative midfielders. us on the other hand had the heading capability but our midfielders could do nothing.

all i'm saying is that its a nice dimension to add to your attack and would make it harder to defend.

which is why i brought it up. it isn't a dire concern, but it's nice to be able not rely on your defenders in set piece situations. for now it will have to be ronaldo, and louis saha. we really need Louis back. if he fails me this year, i might have to turn on him.

i think of bayerns year and it has to be recognized as a rebuilding year, culminating with this summers purchases. i won't question the creativity of your midfield, but i do think you were just thin on talent in a lot of places (relative to past years). obviously the new bayern team is the reason why sweed is a cronic masturbator, but let's see how the competition reacts in the next month before we just hand them the trophy.

tbh im not really bothered because we'll score anyway with our vast amounts of creative talent.
I heard andersons not a bad headerer?

my chronic masturbation is of no concern to you

well we were very thin in the midfield and we also did lack creativity. it was the same old sh*t every week and it got frustrating. but of course ribery changes all that

back on topic......
