Keane - United exit still hurts

The Irishman feels let down with how his November 2005 exit was handled by the club after 12-and-a-half years' loyal service.

The next month he joined Scottish giants Celtic, who he supported as a child, before retiring from playing in June 2006.

He then became Sunderland boss and led the Black Cats to the Premier League at his first attempt, where they play Fulham on Saturday.

But he still remembers his exit from Old Trafford with pain and regret.

Keane told the Irish Times: "The day I left United, in hindsight, I should have stopped playing really.

"I lost the love of the game that Friday morning. I thought football is cruel, life is cruel. It takes two to tango also. I am fully responsible for my own actions but some things are wrong.

"I left on a Friday and they told me certain things before I left that day. I was told the following week I couldn't sign for another club. I had been led to believe I could. There were certain things I was told at certain meetings that were basic lies.

"That was part of the exit plans, I am convinced. Especially with my pride, I wasn't going to accept that. They had a statement prepared and they were thanking me for 11-and-a-half years of service.

"I had to remind the manager [Manchester United chief executive] David Gill I had been there 12-and-a-half years. I think that might have been part of the plan."

He added: "Then the financial stuff was mentioned. I was thinking, my God. I am happy to leave. I won't go down that road. A week later they announced £70 or £80 million profit after telling me I hadn't played for six weeks and so they weren't prepared to do this and that. I told David Gill I had broken my foot playing for Manchester United against Liverpool. Pretty sad.

Wise afterwards

"I look back and think I should have said this and I should have said that. It is like Mick McCarthy at the World Cup. I always think when he said if you don't have respect for me you can't play for me, I should have said to him what I felt. I am not playing for you I am playing for Ireland. It is easy to be wise afterwards."
linkage

tbh i am still a little bit puzzled as to why he was axed anyway. United were short of midfielder, were at times playing badly, the contract was expensive and we needed keane.

I know what he said perhaps shouldn't have been made public but did fergie really expect to put keano on MUTV to talk about united and hide his emotions? Keane never sugar coats what he says and pretty much always says exactly what is on his mind.

Its sad it all ended like it did tbh, fergie probably had his reasons but perhaps it could have been handled better.

It was very surprising to me when I first read the story on manutd.com... couldn't believe he was gone so quickly, because he was the team leader without question. We all remember his contributions in the Champions League glory.
My first thought when he took over at Sunderland was that he wants to quickly gain experience and a resume so that he can take over for Sir Alex when he retires. I still believe that is a big part of his quick jump into managing. I also think his patch up session with Sir Alex was another step toward putting him in prime position for the job.
I am in favor of Keane taking over for Sir Alex when that sad day comes that SAF steps down. I love the fire in Roy Keane... he is without question one of United's all time best players.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I was shocked it all went down so quickly. Wierdly, in the process of doing some searches online this morning (on a work related topic), I came across this article from back then. It prompted me to logon to unitedzone.

The article mentions that at one time Ferguson hoped Keane would be his replacement. I wonder if that could ever happen now? Recent snippets of talk during games mention that Fergie has said he's sticking around for some time. Anyone else think Keane would ever return and ManU would have him?

I can dream...

Its a big game mate ) Keano has some 20 25 years atleast to go ) Who knows what could happen .

Who would have thought sunderland would almost make it to top 10 . if he does bring em to uefa cup spot in the few years and then maybe a chance at a better team like rovers or spuds , who knows , one day keano would take over at united .

But for now , i only see CQ taking over , ole perhaps even giggsy or hughesy , not keano yet
