Paul Scholes could make his 100th Champions League appearance against AS Roma at Old Trafford tonight - but the Salford-born schemer won't be donning the captain's armband in recognition of his service.

The 33-year-old won't even be considered for the role, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. Not out of disrespect, but because the quiet man of United’s team would not welcome the task.

“I won’t be making Scholes captain,” said Sir Alex at his pre-match press conference. “I think he would regard it as a form of punishment!”

He may not take the responsibility of the armband, but there can be no denying the midfielder’s influence on the pitch when it comes to his performances.

Scholes returned in January from a three-month lay-off after suffering a knee injury in training back in October. It took a few games to get up to full speed, but some outstanding performances of late have seen Scholes return to his imperious best.

“I said when he came back from injury that it was like having a new player,” added the boss. “It did take him a few weeks to get back on form. But now he has got his rhythm back, he has been in absolutely fantastic form for us.”

Well, I really hope that, if Scholsey plays tonight, he will do a great job. His recent form has been formidable and you could see the old Scholes playing against Loserpool or Villa.

It would be marvelous if he would be named captain. Or, if he substitutes someone it would be a nice thing for Neville or Giggs to give Paul the armband.

I think he still has a few years in him. His sort of scoop through balls like the assist to Rooney last year against AC Milan are amazing, and his volley against Villa last year was ridiculous.

scholes is a quality player after his eye injury i though it was the end of his career but he had a great come back which i think everyone of us, was happy to hear...
he is simply a great man utd player...

every match he is bringing a lot to the team..
playing 100 match in CL is not an easy thing... thats a sort of award for him...

his assist are great.. there is no word to describe that.. but i think he lacks of shot on target as he was doing before...

Scholesy will make his 100th game against Barcelona.

His passing and vision are still great.

United look really strong in the center with Carrick playing well, Anderson coming along and Hargreaves finally seeming to get fitter and better.

With Scholes having more competition and possibly less games we can probably get a couple more seasons just like Giggsy
