If these numbers are correct, would United be so kind and give Evra that amount. Brown was signed between 50-60k a week. Surely Evra is worth more.

SIR Alex Ferguson is determined to tie down the future of Patrice Evra before heading off on his summer holidays.

The French international has just one year remaining on his contract and is being courted by Europe's leading clubs.

AC Milan have made it clear they want to sign the defender when he becomes a free agent at the end next of season and will offer a big -money deal to lure him to Serie A.

But Ferguson is confident he can convince Evra that his future remains at Old Trafford after turning the 27-year-old into arguably the best left-back in Europe.

The United manager is off to the south of France for his annual holiday next week, and has already handed chief executive David Gill a list of the targets he wants to add to his Premier League and Champions League-winning squad.

Sevilla pair Luis Fabiano and Daniel Alvez are understood to be high on that list, but Ferguson's priority is preventing Evra from walking away after showing so much faith in the left- back since signing him from Monaco in 2006.

Stumbling

The player is so far refusing to commit his future to United, with the main stumbling block being his personal demands of around £70,000 a week.

He is aware that he can get that much if he holds out to the end of his contract and moves to Italy or Spain. And a good display at Euro 2008 could make it even harder for United to resist his demands.

"A lot of people say I am the best left-back in the world," he said. "I know my capacity and if you work hard you can do well.

"My agent and United know my situation. I have one year left and I don't want to speak about my future."

Even if he is stalling over a new deal, Evra has given United hope that he will stay, revealing the crucial role Ferguson has played in his development after a difficult start in England. He said: "French football is so different to the English, which is quicker and more physical.

"I just wanted to walk into the team and I did that. I was very confident with my capacity, but I was angry with myself for not showing my best.

"My first six months did not see the best of me, but he (Ferguson) said: 'Pat, relax. Next year you'll do better.'"

I don't ever think there was any danger of him going anywhere. His value to the team and the club has clearly not gone unnoticed and at a club like Utd first teamers simply do not run down their contracts and leave for free. Still glad to see he has signed though. Integral part of the team
