Default Scholes and giggs to be phased out of team next season

Fergie To Phase Out Giggs & Scholes

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Manchester United veterans Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs will be ‘phased out’ of the team over the course of next season…
Quote:

The pair have been ever-present during United’s glory years, since Scholes made his senior debut in 1994.

Giggs broke through a few years earlier as a prodigious and much-hyped teenager, and has won a staggering 18 major trophies during his time at Old Trafford.

Both are products of the United academy, and between them have wracked up some 1328 appearances for the club, Giggs notching up a record-breaking 759th showing during their Champions League triumph in Moscow on Wednesday.

But with Scholes now 33 years of age and Giggs 34, they have well and truly entered the autumn of their footballing years, both having already retired from the international scene to prolong their club careers.

And Ferguson admits they will see gradually less game-time next term as the likes of Anderson and Nani begin to supplant them in the United midfield.

The Scot said: "There are certain players in the team that will improve immeasurably next year and okay, we have the issue of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs getting to the twilight of their careers.

"They will contribute in a big way next season as they normally do - but not in as many games. They will eventually be phased out as you have to do in life."

I think this will be the best option imo. We still need ryan giggs and scholes but we cant keep playing them all the time because we need to be prepared for when they feel its time to go.

We need to give the younger players a chance or we will suffer like we did when keane left.

Yep, that's good. They are getting tired faster now than they did a couple of years ago. Plus, that's why we bought Nani and Anderson, to substitute Scholes and Giggs. The youngsters need more games and Scholes and Giggs' duty is to leave behind worthy followers.

Agreed with that move. Had to chuckle at this line, though:

I know what he means, but boy, out of context, sure sounds like the gaffer's making some sort of case for elderly population control there!

will be a great shame when they eventually hang up their boots, but they have been immense servants and while i feel they should always be in the team, the likes of nani and anderson need teh games to gain experience if their gonna be full time player for utd in the next few years!

Although they still have parts to play, anderson hargreaves carrick fletcher are not bad players to carry us forward for the future.

I already miss them sometimes at the games, I don't even want to know what it would be like when they're never going to play again, I was so sad when Ole left last year... So seeing them less but knowing they're still at the team is at least something. But like you said, that's why we have Nani and Anderson and I think Anderson is doing great, I'm still not warm with Nani though.

About the Neville comment: I did think about it too, that there's something up we don't know about... It's really quite...

question is whether they give Giggsy another testimonial. He does have three years left to his 20th anniversary with the club and man I'd have to book the first trip to see that match.

Anyone know if Scholesy had a testimonial? I haven't found any reference to it.

It has to happen.

Make it an old-timers vs. current first team match.

Ronaldo, Anderson, Scholes, Carrick, Rio, Vidic, Van Der Sar, Nani, Tevez etc.

VS.

Cantona, Schmeichel, Beckham, Van Nistelrooy, Yorke, Cole, Sheringham, Pallister, Bruce, Irwin, Robson, Keane, etc.

Giggsy can play for one side each half. Change the rules a bit so the old-timers can keep up (no shots from inside the box, rolling subs with no more than 10 minutes of action at a time, etc.).

Mouth-watering, no?
