Well if Utd do happen to win the league then yes it will be claimed they brought the title. Will it be made into such a big deal like it has been with Chelsea? Most likely not since its Utd and not Romans money.
However they havnt won anything yet. So you cant comment until end of season and the final standing are confirmed.
Buying the league will also be determined by the winning margin (if they do indeed win). If Utd win the league by 10+ points then the statement will be made. However if it goes into the last weeks of the season then you cant really say it imho.
there's another way of looking at it. if they win by a large margin you could say that they would have won without the money, and the money just extended the lead.
No i dont' think we're buying the league, and i think most people have touched on the key points already. I'll highlight some though:
1) The English youth system is going down down down, and United can't sit around waiting for this to improve. So we have to get the youngsters (who happen to be very expensive) from abroad early so that we can train them in the way we want them to play.
2) We needed players for 4 positions, Giggs' and Scholes' positions as well as a striker and a holding midfielder. We've got two youngsters to hopeuflly replace Giggs and Scholes so that's solved. We've also brought in top class players in Tevez and Hargreaves to fill the only other voids we have. Top Class talent affords top class trasnfer money, so we spent.
I think that's just about it, we had to invest in the future, and in today's market (coupled with a declining English youth system) you have to spend big to do that if you're a top club.
i dislike using your 2) bullet point to defend united. I don't think that holds much water.
so are we buying into this theory that the Premiership is the imperialist league tournament of the world? you look at clubs like bolton, arsenal, newcastle, blackburn, even sunderland. how many of these clubs haven't bought all of their players. relative to other clubs do we have more starters from our youth system? i'd say yes. at least for now. add fletcher, wes, evans and o'shea to the list.

I'm a bit confused as to what you are saying. Bolton, Arsenal, Newcastle, Blackburn, etc. don't compete for the league year in year out. Arsenal might be a stretch for that statement but the fact of the matter is, none of those teams can be expected to be consistent top 4 quality (leave out Arsenal). So are you saying we should just forgo the top 4 and concentrate on building our youth system? Regardless of whether it's good enough or not?

no i'm saying that the league has become by default a league of buying and it isn't anything strange. no one can argue that united don't develop their talent relative to other teams.
on the margins, arguing over if you've bought the league is a little rediculous if the entire league does nothing but buy. someone will always, by definition, be buying the league. thus you've disarmed any rival fan looking to spout abuse on united. voila

does that make sense?
Surely does. btw, are you in any way 'related' to a certain 'shaolin' character previously seen on 'another forum'?

well isn't it the Glazer's money?
and yes i agree with the statement that United are 'buying' the league. It probably won't be a big deal because United just won the league and compared to Chelsea who came out of nowhere.
In order to compete, the club needs to buy players who are ready to play. no team is perfect in that they don't need to buy anyone and dont have any weaknesses. you can do that in two ways, promoting youth or buying. but if the youth arent ready then you have to buy. (i dont know the youth situation w/regards to united but if there are capable youth then i think SAF wouldve promoted them). it's tough when it comes to promoting youth or buying.
yeah i'll agree, and at the highest level of every league, it's a blanket statement that's true. every major team essentially outsources their youth systems. To have a youth system that can provide for every position adequately would take an investment that is 5 times larger (if not more) than what United have done in their academy. This especially is in reflection to United's fantastic Academy system which is legendary for it's products.
That said, Bayern, Real Madrid, Milan, Lyon and Barcelona are all as guilty and trying to marginally say one does it more than another is a fools task. That said, there is a difference and Chelsea is my exception. sorry zaffo
