Patrice Evra looks set to miss Manchester United's Champions League clash with Villarreal on Wednesday after he suffered concussion against Liverpool.

The left-back was hurt in a clash of heads during the 2-1 defeat at Anfield and was taken to hospital after he fell ill on the coach back to Manchester.

John O'Shea is now set to take Evra's place for the Group E game at Old Trafford.

United met the Spaniards in the same competition three years ago and it is a match that taught Wayne Rooney a big lesson.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side were forced to grind out a 0-0 draw as the England striker was sent off in the 64th minute for sarcastically clapping Kim Morten Nielsen after the referee booked him for an innocuous challenge.

Rooney said: 'It was a reality check for me. It was a ridiculous thing to do. That was a big turning point for me. I have learned from that.'

The bad news keeps on coming.

Carrick is out for 6 weeks with a broken bone in his foot.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will be out for up to six weeks after it was revealed he has broken a bone in his foot.

The 28-year-old suffered the injury in a tackle by Yossi Benayoun in the first half of Saturday's 2-1 loss to Liverpool and left Anfield on crutches.

He had only just returned from three weeks out with an ankle injury.

It is a further blow to Carrick who had to pull out of the England squad for the game against the Czech Republic.

"We have some injury problems for tomorrow," conceded Ferguson.

"Michael Carrick, as you know, it's not worked out for us. He came off on Saturday and he's got a crack in his foot.

"It was diagnosed on Sunday afternoon and he'll be out for four to six weeks, which is not good news.

"Berbatov is very doubtful following his knee injury in Saturday's game. There's one or two other bumps and bruises. Wes Brown got a knee injury, hopefully he'll be okay tomorrow.

"Berbatov came off and went back on again in the game. There is swelling on the knee but we're working on that. We'll see.

"We've a good strong squad so we should be okay for what is an important game."

Ronaldo's return

It was not solely doom and gloom in Manchester though, as Cristiano Ronaldo is primed for his return following ankle surgery over the summer.

Ronaldo's name rarely escaped from the back pages in the close-season, as Real Madrid's pursuit of his signature became the most protracted transfer story of the summer.

It will be interesting, therefore, to see what kind of reception he receives from the Old Trafford faithful, if as expected he makes an appearance off the substitutes' bench.

"He'll certainly be involved. Whether we start him or not, regardless of other players, is not a major decision. I think he'll start on the bench," concluded Ferguson.

I can't say im surprised to hear Berbatov is doubtful. He copped an absolute battering and received no protection form the ref at all...and somehow we ended up with the red card...

Berba and Ron fit, Foster ruled out

Dimitar Berbatov and Cristiano Ronaldo could start for Manchester United at Chelsea - but Ben Foster has been ruled out for two months.

Sir Alex Ferguson is tempted to put both Berbatov and Ronaldo in his starting line-up to face the table-topping Blues at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Berbatov missed Wednesday's Champions League draw with Villarreal after suffering a knee injury at Liverpool last weekend, while Ronaldo made his comeback in midweek after two months out following ankle surgery.

But both players are now ready for action.

Ferguson is without suspended defender Nemanja Vidic, while England goalkeeper Foster is out for six to eight weeks with ankle ligament damage suffered in a reserve-team match against Blackburn on Thursday night.

Edwin's injury not serious

Edwin van der Sar should be fit to face Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, despite needing to be substituted at Stamford Bridge in the first half.




The Dutchman, who was injured in a collision with Chelsea forward Florent Malouda in Sunday’s 1-1 draw, played on briefly before signalling to the bench that he could no longer continue.

“He got some studs in the kneecap and there was a bit of swelling there,” Sir Alex told MUTV after the final whistle. “Hopefully he’ll be okay for next week.”

Van der Sar isn’t the only Reds goalkeeper who’ll be visiting the treatment room at Carrington this week.

Ben Foster fell awkwardly on his ankle playing for United’s Reserves last Thursday and is expected to be out of action for up to two months.

“Ben’s not had any luck,” Sir Alex told media last Friday. “He’s been blighted by injuries so far in his career.

“He’s a top goalkeeper and I just hope he gets a little break now.”

Tomasz Kuszczak, who replaced van der Sar at Chelsea, will almost certainly don United’s goalkeeper jersey on Tuesday night when Middlesbrough arrive at Old Trafford in the Carling Cup.

Well it seems Fabio Da Silva will be out for a bit with a shoulder injury. He is set to have an operation in the coming weeks.

Also, Manucho seems to be having issues recovering from his metatarsal injury. Sir Alex was looking to use him for tomorrow's Carling Cup match against Boro, but can't.

Attentions turn to the Carling Cup after Sunday's valuable Premier League point against Chelsea. And Sir Alex is keen to do better than United’s exit at the hands of Coventry City at the same stage of the competition last season.

"My team will involve changes,” he told United Review. "There will be a mix of youth and experience."

Now reading reports that Manucho is just fine.

So fine in fact, that he's included in the the team's lineup against Boro in the Carling Cup.

The African spent the latter half of last season on loan in Greece with Panathinaikos but has now received his work permit and recovered from a broken metatarsal, so should start against Gareth Southgate's men.

Anderson and Nani are also expected to be in Sir Alex Ferguson's 20-man squad, while Gary Neville should also get some more match practice, with Cristiano Ronaldo once again expected to be on the bench as he continues to search for top form after his recent ankle operation.

Brazilian defender Fabio Da Silva will miss the tie, though, after being forced to undergo a shoulder operation.

Da Silva would have been a certain starter but is instead undergoing rehabilitation work for an injury that is likely to rule him out for a couple of months.
