Default Anderson suffers knee injury

We were fully waiting until July 1st to begin the 08-09 injury thread, but a rather depressing injury scary happened last night in a world cup qualifer. Brazil v Argentina.

Seems Javier Mashcherano put in a rather clumsy challenge on Anderson. He was stretchered off and today will be undergoing a scan.

Its either cruciate ligament damage or a twisted knee. Lets hope for the latter.

Losing Anderson for a portion of the season will be massive.

Anderson suffers knee injury

United midfielder Anderson will undergo a scan today after injuring his knee in Brazil’s 0-0 draw with Argentina on Wednesday night.

Anderson fell awkwardly under a first-half challenge from Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano and was stretchered from the field.

Some reports speculate the 20-year-old may have suffered cruciate ligament damage, while others claim it’s nothing more than a twist. Brazil’s medical staff are expected to make a full assessment on Thursday.

The draw leaves Brazil with nine points from their first six World Cup qualifiers, in fourth position behind Colombia, Argentina and surprise leaders Paraguay.

UPDATE:

Quote:
Anderson's knee injury is not as serious as first feared, according to Brazil team doctor Jose Luiz Runco.

The Manchester United midfielder was stretchered off in the first-half of Brazil's 0-0 draw with Argentina in their World Cup qualifier after twisting his left knee.

Runco is still awaiting the results of further scans, but believes that the damage sustained by the Old Trafford man is not serious.

Twist

He said: "Anderson felt an injury to his knee, a twist.

"However, it doesn't seem so serious. We will be sure only after the MRI scans."

Anderson had been selected to play for the Under 23 side in a friendly in Volta Redonda against a combination of Rio de Janeiro-based players on Sunday.

Runco added: "Only after the scans will we be able to make a decision about Anderson's participation in Sunday's match."

Yeah. Just read about this on the official site. Let's hope he'll be ok.

In case of a cruciate ligament damage - how long is the recovery period?

big stone off the heart hearing the injury isn't so though as first looked.

it would be though for him to have another big injury at this age after that from the Porto time.

it depends on which cruciate was damaged. ACl or MCL. Recovery time can be as few as a couple weeks, to upwards of a year.

The Brazil NT medical staff is convinced that the injury was nothing serious at all and that he should be ready to go for Brazil's next qualifier. Great news. As long as they are keeping United's medical staff informed so they can assist/recommend treatments, I'm happy.

Seems Cristiano Ronaldo picked up a foot injury 3 months ago, which will require surgery.

No indications where the injury is on the foot or length of recovery time. Hopefully he doesn't have to miss any of the preseason training program.

Quote:
Ronaldo: I've had foot injury for three months

BASEL, June 19 (Reuters) - Cristiano Ronaldo has been playing with a foot injury for three months, the winger said after his Portugal team lost 3-2 to Germany in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals on Thursday.

'I'm going to have an operation now,' Ronaldo told reporters. 'I have had a small problem for about three months, in my foot.

'I'll have the operation and then have a good recovery period.'

God, if Ronnie had been playing with injury for three months, how would he play without it ? Anyway, I hope that this operation and recovery period will discourage Madristas from trying to buy him.

I'm so relieved that Anderson's injury is not so serious. Hopefully he will recover for the team's getting-ready-to-the-season period.

Surgery is a success, however United won't know his fitness/health on the ankle until a months time.

Definitely out for 6 weeks, leaving him only a week to get ready for the season start.

I really wished he would have gotten this surgery before he went on holiday. Mind you rest and a wait and see was more than likely done, leaving surgery as a last resort.

Quote:
Ronaldo ankle op successful

CRISTIANO Ronaldo has undergone a successful operation on his right ankle, Manchester United have announced.

The Portuguese winger had a procedure in Amsterdam carried out by a Dutch surgeon, but the club say they will not be able to state when he will be fit again until he is seen by the specialist in a month.

It is likely he will be out for at least six weeks and miss the start of the new season.

United said in a statement: “Cristiano Ronaldo underwent surgery today to his right ankle.

“The operation was performed by Professor C. Niek van Dijk at The Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam and the initial indications are that the procedure was successful.

“Cristiano will begin his convalescence under the direction of club medical staff and an estimation of his return to full fitness will be possible following review by the specialist in one month.”

Default Re: Injury Thread 2008 - 2009 ***SPOILERS***

Was waiting for this bit of news to be confirmed by United, but so far nothing. Once a confirmation happens, I'll list it in the first post.

According to various reports, Manucho has suffered a metatarsal fracture. He could be out 8-10 weeks.

Sort of makes the hunt for a striker all the more vital now.

Quote:
Metatarsal curse strikes Manucho

Manchester United have suffered a blow as Manucho Goncalves returned to training carrying a foot injury.

The severity of the injury will be confirmed once the Angolan international undergoes a scan.

Initial reports from Goal suggest the striker has become the latest victim of the metatarsal fracture.

Over the past half-dozen seasons Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Ashley Cole, Ledley King and Michael Owen (amongst others) have all been sidelined with the injury.

If Manucho has a metatarsal problem he will be out of action for eight-ten weeks which will see him miss United's pre-season tour of Africa.

The 25-year-old spent part of last season on loan at Panathinaikos and was expected to be included in the Red Devils squad for their Premier League title defence.
