Manchester United's Michael Carrick will miss England's friendly with Czech Republic on Wednesday.

The Red Devils midfielder suffered an ankle injury in United's Premier League opener against Newcastle on Sunday.

The former Tottenham man was forced off after just 25 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Sir Alex Ferguson immediately ruled the 27-year-old out of international action.

The United boss claimed Carrick's ankle had "swollen up badly" following his substitution and expects him to be out for "two to three weeks".

Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas has been called up as a replacement.

Jenas was originally left out of Fabio Capello's 23-man party but has been granted a reprieve following Carrick's withdrawal.

Sir Alex Ferguson admits Cristiano Ronaldo is 'a little bit ahead' in his recovery from an ankle operation.
The Manchester United winger underwent surgery earlier in the summer following the end of Portugal's Euro 2008 campaign.


He was initially ruled out for three months and Ferguson had been expecting Ronaldo to return to action at the start of October.


Ronaldo has been involved in light training with the champions this week amid reports he will be fit for the end of September.


And United boss Ferguson concedes the Footballer of the Year is slightly ahead of schedule in his quest for a first-team comeback.


"He's maybe a little bit ahead," said Ferguson on Sky Sports News.
"He's surprisingly good. He's been jogging all week, but it's only jogging, there's nothing serious about that."

Squad swelling for Pompey

Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful that his squad will be boosted by the return of a handful of key players in time for Monday evening's trip to Portsmouth.

Carlos Tevez, who missed last weekend's draw with Newcastle after a family bereavement, will play after featuring for Argentina on Wednesday, giving United a vital extra body in attack.

There is also a chance that Owen Hargreaves and Ryan Giggs could be in contention after training this week, while Anderson will return this weekend from Brazil's Olympic team.

Ji-sung Park has also taken great strides in recent days, and has played a full part in training all week, but the trip to Fratton Park will come too soon for him.

"Tevez is back," Sir Alex told his pre-match press conference. "He’s available. Hargreaves and Ji-sung Park both trained with the first team this week, I’m delighted with that. Ji won’t be considered, Hargreaves we’ll assess on Sunday to see if he can play a part.
"Anderson will be back on Sunday, so that’s an extra body. Giggs has trained the last couple of days, plus all the players have come back from internationals fit, which is a bonus, so we’re ok in that respect."

The United manager also confirmed that Michael Carrick and Cristiano Ronaldo are on schedule for their own returns from injury - three weeks and three months respectively.

Yep, but still we need the rest of the injured players. Even with Tevez and Hargo, I'm still not very optimistic about result in the next match.

There is no doubt in anybody's mind here that Tevez would directly go into the starting line up on monday . But there are a lot of contradicting news about Hargo . Some say he is fit , a couple of daily mail articles said , him and park would still miss the game . We could do well with Park more than hargo IMO .

The Portuguese star was expected to be out until October after undergoing ankle surgery in the summer, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he is well ahead of his scheduled recovery time.

Ronaldo, who received the European Golden Boot award on Saturday night after scoring 31 league goals last season, is expected to feature on the bench when United travel to Stamford Bridge.

"I think he will be on the subs' bench against Chelsea," said Ferguson.

"Ronaldo is training now, he's with the first team. He's come on leaps and bounds. He's likely to be involved next week.
