Default Manchester United Squad For Africa Preseason Friendlies

Here it is:

Squad: Tomasz Kuszczak, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Wesley Brown, Paul Scholes, Owen Hargreaves, Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, Mikael Silvestre, Gary Neville, Darren Fletcher, Ben Foster, Daniel Simpson, Lee Martin, Fraizer Campbell, Darron Gibson, Jonathan Evans, Ben Amos, Christopher Eagles, Michael Clegg, Andrew Caveney, Gary Walker.

van der Sar, Evra, Ronaldo, Nani, Park, Hargreaves, Welbeck, Anderson all out due to either extended vacation because of Euro '08, injury or international playing commitments.

Not a bad group at all. The youngsters should get a decent runout early on and hopefully make an impression.

Manchester United are treating their three-match trip to South Africa no different to any of their journeys into Europe for Champions League games.

The United squad that arrives in Cape Town on Friday morning for Saturday's game against Kaizer Chiefs at Newlands, was named after a training session on Thursday morning and United's Carrington training ground.

The squad leaves for Manchester airport where they were to catch a 2pm flight to Heathrow, before boarding for their long-haul to Cape Town.

"That's what they do these days... go straight from the training pitch to Manchester airport," said Stuart Matterson, the dedicated United reporter for the Manchester Evening News.

United named a travelling squad of 25 and besides the injured, only goalkeepers Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Ckuszczak, the wantaway Cristiano Ronaldo, Portuguese contryman Nani and Frenchman Patrice Evra are missing from the travelling squad, having been given time off after the Euro Championships.

So Cape Town's huge band of Man U fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of the likes of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez strutting their stuff at Newlands.

Locals should also get a glimpse of United's next generation, those kids waiting in the Old Trafford wings ready to jump into the boots of veterans such as Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes.

Striker Fraizer Campbell, 20, is likely to get a run at Newlands where his speed and ability to make a goal out of nothing will have the Amakhosi defence on their toes.

As well as United's missing Euro contingent, another familiar face will be missing from the European Champions' bench on Saturday following the departure of Ferguson's right-hand man Carlos Queiroz.

Matterson said Mike Phelan will be Ferguson's assistant at Newlands on Saturday.

"There has been lots of speculation with names like Brian McClair, Michael Laudrup, Lauren Blanc and the Sporting Lisbon coach Paulo Bento mentioned to take over from Queiroz," said Matterson from Manchester.

"But Fergie certainly won't rush into anything... there has been talk that Mike Phelan might even move up as assistant."

United go into their three-game tour in buoyant mood, according to midfielder Michael Carrick. "The season has come round pretty quickly, but it is the longest I have had off for a number of years. It was nice to have the break, but I have been ready to come back," Carrick said.

"We won our first pre-season game at Aberdeen last Saturday, but it was all about the fitness and getting sharper.

"Now we move on to the next game and we will be ready for South Africa. Obviously we are nowhere near our peak but that is what these games are for."

Squad: Tomasz Kuszczak, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Wesley Brown, Paul Scholes, Owen Hargreaves, Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, Mikael Silvestre, Gary Neville, Darren Fletcher, Ben Foster, Daniel Simpson, Lee Martin, Fraizer Campbell, Darron Gibson, Jonathan Evans, Ben Amos, Christopher Eagles, Michael Clegg, Andrew Caveney, Gary Walker.

He has had a recurrence of his tendinitis. They say he'll be good for the start of the season, but I still find it worrying that he is again suffering from tendinitis after he was out for so many weeks last season. I guess it's one of thos things that might keep popping up.
