Rooney to skipper Manchester United in Rome

Wayne Rooney will captain Manchester United in their Champions League clash with Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is committed to playing most of his fringe players in the Group F dead rubber, with many of his senior stars remaining in Manchester.

Along with Wes Brown and Michael Carrick, Rooney was the only member of the Red Devils' starting line-up from Saturday's victory over Derby to make the flight to Italy, with Ferguson confirming the 22-year-old will wear the captain's armband.

'He has been pestering me for quite a while now, so I have given in,' said Ferguson.

Rooney has done the job once before - in last season's European victory over FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford - and the fact he has got the job ahead of John O'Shea, who skippered United in their Carling Cup defeat to Coventry earlier this season, indicates Ferguson does see Rooney as future captaincy material.

The England international will need to be at his very best if he is to guide United to victory tomorrow given the lack of experience within the travelling squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand were among the major names to sit out the trip.

Danny Simpson, Jonny Evans, Nani, Darren Fletcher and Louis Saha do have first team experience. However there are five completely unexposed youngsters in the 20-man party, including reserve team top scorer Febian Brandy and last season's youth team captain Sam Hewson.

Legend in the making. It's about time that he got the arm band and I'm looking to us to win it, regardless of our youth team being on the pitch. Go on lads, get it in there.

Interested to see Rooney wear the armband once again. Wondering how the kiddies will respond to his leadership and just as important, interested in to see Roo's behaviour towards the refs. Hoping that he contains his profanities

Would like to know why Ronaldo hasn't captained out a side yet. He is Portugal's captain and quite a few younger players look up to him.

The team follows their captains example. In Portugal's case, it is now obvious why they are so well known for playing football horizontally. I'd rather have a hard nosed, attack minded, aggressive, workaholic for a captain. As for the cursing, he'll never be able to top Keano in that department. He's the ideal candidate and hopefully keeps the armband off of Ronaldo for as long as possible.

Agreed. i think Rooney is a natural leader, influencing and put in heart and aggression all over the pitch.

I think he definetely has the key attributes to becoming a good hardworking captain.

However I'm starting to feel that Rooney is playing at 80 percent of his ability. I don't know if Ferguson tried to tone him down too much or doesn't allow himself to have that much creative freedom or something because he just isn't as ferocious and rough as before. That raw power seems to be missing from him, he's far too calm now ironically.
