Is Michael Carrick Still Effective? *spoilers* -

We've barely had the lad for a year and a half, and he has been basically rendered useless by Anderson and Hargreaves. With Ferdinand and Owen missing this week we seemed to lack the steel required and Carrick was supposed to be the stop-gap needed. Let's be honest, he wasn't. Do you see him used in a different way? Do you think he's surplus at United? What else can be done with the lad...

There is a reason I bleed red. United until I die.
I think he'll be useful. Maybe he's going through a tough period. He'll come back.
But if he doesn't do that till the end of the season, i am sure they'll sell him.
Don't know. I'm not a bing fan of his!
i just don't have a lot of hope for the lad. He's been tremendous at times, but when things get rough, i have a lot more confidence in Hargreaves than I do with Carrick, and he's not exactly the type of player that can play well without getting playing time.
Still his passing is marvelous, and he definitely has his moments. Maybe the answer is not to have him as the man infront of the defense. He's more adept at being the attacker, while Hargo sits back. The problem there is that Anderson would have to make way.
@ Moley: great sigs!

Funny, I was thinking exactly the same thing last week. Remember some of his displays last season, especially the weeks around the 7-1 Roma game? He was great, fantastic passer of the ball, although sometimes prone to try the perfect long ball over the top.
But a holding player he is not, much better going forward. So much more effective with someone like Hargreaves behind him. But when the ginger prince comes back, will Carrick be in third place? Seems like it, yet I would hate to lose him because look how good he was last season once he had an extended run in the team.
Michal Carrick is a weird player.. It's hard to figure him out and what exactly his strenths are (apart from acurate passing). I don't mean this in a negative way but don't think it souds too possitive either..
he contributed to last year success. No question about it. Seems like now with all those midfielders in the team waiting on line for a starting place his confidence is getting affected. I guess he doesn't handle competition well.
Hopefully we can find a proper role for him. One that he feels confident in it and that motivates him as well.
What bothers me about him is his lack of pace and ( sometimes) lack of passion. If playing for Manchester United can't motivate a player I'm not sure what can...
i don't know if it's lack of passion. he doesn't show it on the outside, but he is just one of those players that holds it in. that's not unsual. however, his personality won't do much to inspire those aroudn you either. He's operates at a cool temperature and as much as we might not like it we need to be objective and not hold it against him when we judge him.
as for his pace, it is definitely one of his weaknesses, but it seems like to me his place is not to replace the holding player but the attacking. while i can see the need for an extravegant passer, what about carrick makes him better than anderson? for me, he's the one that he's competing with for a place.

I have to say i am very worried. At the start of the season he was one of my favourite players due to good performances. But now he seems to have lost that touch and now can't seem to make those passes. There are small glimpses that he might hit his form but he needs to make the most of his oppurtunity in the first team because we have players like Fletcher, and O'Shea all vying for a role and there is Anderson, Scholes and Hargreaves who are the likely contenders for the central midfield roles.
