Default Ronaldo's Loyalty To United - 01-07-2008, 11:55 AM

We're having a bit of a discussion in another thread, that has now lead me to think that the misunderstanding is due to our perceived loyalty of Ronaldo to the team. Vote in the poll ^above.

The poll closes in two weeks.

^ i agree

IMO he comes across as someone who is content to stay at the club if things are going good and we are playing well/ winning trophies. If we go through a rough spell i cant see him staying because he is very ambitious and wants to beat kaka to that POTY award.

i like him but i also hate him.

My thoughts exactly^

I admire him as he is a rare talent but i also hate him.

I would say he is quite loyal as he has played a very important part in Uniteds success of the past couple of seasons even after the whole World Cup thing, and imo he will continue to be loyal to the club as he knows he can win things at united and become even better.

i think he's indifferent as long as we're winning, and SAF is about. once he smells the end of his contract though, i only see one result. his current level of indifference and seasaw quotes in the past lead to only one conclusion: 5

I voted 6 also. In my opinion, especially after the whole World Cup affair, Sir Alex protected him and took him under his wing. Ronaldo when interviewed, always speaks highly of Sir Alex and probably sees him as a father figure. He seems settled at United. He's still young and has alot to learn and what better place than at United. With this team, he must know that this is his best chance to win the coveted Champions League. It's the media from Spain and Italy that make him seem to be turning an eye. So why didn't I vote higher than 6 you say, that's easy. Money!!!

Alex just reminded me of an article I quickly searched for:

Dated July 9, 2006: BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Man Utd | Ronaldo wants transfer to Spain

Quote:
Ronaldo wants transfer to Spain

Ronaldo has been at Old Trafford for three years

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo says he will join Real Madrid or Barcelona after making it clear he wants to leave Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old has been criticised in England for his role in the sending off of United team-mate Wayne Rooney when Portugal beat England in the World Cup.

"I should get out of Manchester as the circumstances are not right," he said.

"Nobody stood up for me and my desire is to play in Spain. Will it be Real or Barcelona? It will be one of them."

Ronaldo claimed: "For some time I haven't had any support from my chief executive (David Gill) or my coach (Sir Alex Ferguson). They should have come out in my defence but no-one did.

"I am calm, I know I have done a good job and I've grown a lot in this World Cup, from a physical point of view and a mental one. In the next few seasons I will be even better."

Ronaldo is under contract at Old Trafford until 2010 and boss Sir Alex Ferguson said last week he expected the player to report for pre-season training.

606: Have your say

He said: "There isn't a problem with the boy and I don't expect any problems.

"When people have been involved in a bid to become president at Madrid they have used clubs like ours."

New Real manager Fabio Capello said it was good news that Ronaldo was considering a move to The Bernabeu.

"He is a Manchester United player but everyone wants to come to play here and I think he really wants to and this is good news for me," said Capello.

"We will have to wait and see but at the moment I cannot say anything."

Ronaldo joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon for £12.24m in August 2003.

Former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill said Ferguson was the ideal person to diffuse the Rooney/Ronaldo disagreement.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "One of the greatest managers of all time should sort that problem out, and I don't think he's had too much difficulty in the past.

"What do you do on the first day of training? I think you would have to lighten the mood.

"There will be a few weeks now after the World Cup is over before Manchester United meet up, and I think there might be a time of reflection for both of them, and I honestly think that they should put it to the side."

he quickly changed his tune by September, but it was the first link i found when i googled this. If i actually put in an effort I'm sure the rest will surface.

The reason why he changed tune in September was because Fergie and the united backroom staff did back him up and defend him... and give him more money.

I think he'll play for United another 2 or 3 years, and then he'll leave. He wants to play in Spain 'cause he has been playing in England for 4 and a half years, plus Spain is much more closer to his home. Don't think he's the kind of player to spend his entire career at one club. I think that if Real offers him more money he'll leave sooner. I can only hope that, by the time he'll leave, we'll be able to manage without him.
