I understand the money issue. I understand the appealing to the global fanbase issue. That's what the summer is for. There should be a self-imposed "friendlies window" of sorts, only open between mid/end of May and the first week of August.

Besides, one of the cases put forth for friendlies is so that youngsters/fringe players get some exposure. We already play those in-season exhibitions anyway: they're called Carling Cup matches.
true about the carling cup but we were knocked out by coventry so thats no longer an option. The League is too competitive for most of the reserves and the fa cup is no option atm. We dont have the easiest fixtures so it may be unwise to risk it.

I agree that the summer would perhaps be the most ideal time for it but like i said, money talks. I think it will be a nice break for the players too and i think fergie wants the league more than anyone so he will probably only play the big players, who we cant cover for, for a few minutes.

If we play all our big players for each of the games then im against it. However, if we dont then im all for it.

Sums up my views tbh, aswell as the fact its always going to occur as football clubs are businesses and any option to bring money in is taken.

Money talks any time of year.

And I really hope that there wasn't some sort of stipulation as far as playing time for the big-name stars. I know that if I was a local and paid good money to go watch Manchester United play, I'd be really pissed if the big names played less than half an hour.

The thing is though, that the trip this month to teh Kingdom will include all the first team players. Sure some reserves might get some playing time there as well, but it's still goign to drain the energy of the first teamers as well..

Maybe in the begining or at the end, but with United currently in the heat of 3 competitions, we need all the help we can get. Sure, send a reserve side, but ROnadlo, ROoney, Tevez and the lot don't need to be laboring over a friendly.

United is doing a favor for these games, and than they are forced to play a certain squad, something just doesn't seem right.

I voted "no". I understand that money talks but to be "required" to field a full team, I am totally against. Save the friendlies for the off season!

I don't think they should be required to field a full strength squad, but I'm all for as many games as the reserves can handle. Bring 'em to the US...I'd be ecstatic to see them.

there lies the problem.

Would you pay top dollar to watch the United reserves?

Folks are committing big money to see United's first team. The team that linesup on a regular basis.

But to go with your thoughts on the reserve side. Do they tour and if so, who against? other reserve sides? Lower league first teams?

Top dollar...hmmm...you know what? I probably would. If the reserve team came and toured the US, I'd pay about what you'd pay to see an MLS game here (which I haven't done; no interest). I probably wouldn't pay what it costs to see a United game at OT, though, no.

I don't think the reserves tour, do they? They should, though. We had the AC Milan primavera (U-21) come to Portland and play our USL D1 team (they tied 1-1 and Portland beat them on penalties). I think the reserves should come and play our USL teams...or even our MLS teams. I'd pay to see either of those games.

Nope. For example, I wouldn't pay what I paid in 2003 to see the reserves in action.

But on the flipside, yeah, it wouldn't hurt to have the reserves go on tour. If they came to the US, for example, I think they'd do fine against USL teams or even a couple of MLS teams.
