RAMSEY SET FOR UNITED TALKS
Welsh teenager Aaron Ramsey is expected to travel to Manchester United's Carrington training ground in the next 48 hours for talks with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The European champions believe they hold the initiative in the increasingly fraught race to capture the Cardiff star, who became the youngest player to appear in an FA Cup final last month.

United announced on Tuesday they had agreed a fee with Cardiff for the 17 year-old but that was quickly followed by a statement from Ninian Park that they had also agreed a fee with another Premier League club, now accepted as being Arsenal.

Everton entered the fray with their own formal bid for the Wales Under-21 international, who was in John Toshack's senior squad last week for the two friendlies with Iceland and Holland without participating in either.

Everton have now been given permission to talk to the Caerphilly-born player but that courtesy also applies to both Manchester United and Arsenal.

However, Ramsey's advisors have made it clear the player has not agreed terms with any of the three sides.

Initial talks are expected first with the Premier League champions, although Ramsey will speak to both Arsenal and Everton as well.

Everton released a statement which said: "The Bluebirds have accepted a bid of £5million from Everton for the 17-year-old midfielder, and have now been given permission to talk to the player about a move to Goodison Park."

Ferguson held talks in Moscow last month ahead of the Champions League final with both Cardiff boss Dave Jones and chief executive Peter Ridsdale.

And it is believed that is the bid Cardiff would prefer because they would immediately have the player returned to them for a season-long loan, which would boost their own promotion plans for the next campaign.

Cardiff are desperate to build on their success of reaching the cup final and want to be in the Premier League when their new stadium is opened at the beginning of the 2009-10 season.

Liverpool have also made a verbal enquiry but have yet to table a formal bid. Manager Rafael Benitez could offer winger Paul Anderson and striker Adam Hammill on one-year loans as part of a possible package.

But Arsenal's move is more intriguing. Ramsey's best friend is former Cardiff youngster Chris Gunter, who joined Tottenham last season.

Also at Spurs is another Cardiff-born player, Gareth Bale. All three are friends and international colleagues and having two familiar faces in north London would certainly help Ramsey as he steps up into the Premier League.

Ramsey is expected to consider his options over the weekend and is likely make a decision late next week.

It's good to see ManU linked with some good young British talent. I hope he ends up signing with them.

Cardiff starlet Ramsey favours Arsenal move

Aaron Ramsey has chosen to place his future in the hands of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger after shunning offers from Manchester United and Everton.

The 17-year-old Cardiff midfielder was given the option of joining any of the Premier League trio after they met the Welsh club's valuation, which Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale has confirmed as £5million.

And the FA Cup finalists revealed this morning that after a week of negotiations, Ramsey had opted for Emirates Stadium and Wenger's proven track record for nurturing world-class youngsters.

The Gunners were reported to have flown the Welshman out to Basle at the weekend for discussions with Wenger, who is in Switzerland and Austria to fulfil media commitments at Euro 2008.

But it appears his mind had already been made up by then.

A potential sticking point to the transfer was seemingly Arsenal's unwillingness to loan Ramsey back to City next season - something United were prepared to do.

And Ridsdale has candidly admitted that he would have liked the hotly-tipped teenager to move to Old Trafford.

'We would have much preferred him to remain as a Cardiff City player or returned here on loan next season had he gone somewhere else,' Ridsdale told BBC Sport.

'The only deal with a loan-back option was with Manchester United but ultimately it is up to the player to decide where he wants to go.

'In an ideal world I would have wished him to go to Manchester United were to he to leave us, but we have to be careful as we have relationships with Arsenal and want to do business with them in the future.'

On the nature of Arsenal's bid, he added: 'It is a very straightforward, no strings attached £5million cash offer - simple.'

Ramsey's preference for north London was confirmed by Cardiff this morning.

'Cardiff City were informed on Friday morning that Aaron Ramsey's preferred destination this summer is at the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal,' a statement on Home | Cardiff City read.

'We will now continue the dialogue with the Gunners with a view to Aaron's move being completed.

'The move, unlike other options, however, does not include a loan-back period at Ninian Park for the 2008-09 season.'

After making his Bluebirds debut as a substitute against Hull in April 2007, Ramsey made 21 appearances last season, scoring twice.

I thought we had signed this lad??? I was pretty excited about it too. Looks like Arsenal swooped in last minute. The transfer market really confuses me. Now I will forever have a reason to root against Ramsey and hope he never wins any silverware.

Yep, shame we couldn't sign him.

I could find only one reason he went to Arsenal:

im sure he will be at arsenal next year.

shame really, he could have played alongside giggs, and learnt from him in training.

but hey, we have ol' luis nani on the left wing who will have a huge future ahead of him.

What a shame he didn't choose United and a chance to play and train beside legends like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Even he was to be loaned back for a year, he would get vital experience. I can't believe he chose Le Arse over us.

As I said to a certain buck-toothed Brazilian a couple of years ago, "Piss off, then. Don't say we didn't give you a chance."
