Manchester United are eyeing Lazio teenager Federico Macheda

With Italy U21 star Giuseppe Rossi already on their books, United are preparing to raid Lazio's Allievi team for 15 year-old Macheda. United must wait until August 22 to secure the youngster as a 16 year-old, but so confident are they of a deal, United are already preparing a compensation package for Lazio.

United intend to move the Macheda family to Manchester and an agreement is close. For their part, Lazio management have already included Macheda in their senior squad's preseason camp in Austria, but are resigned to losing the striker.

Un altro italiano vuole conquistare Manchester. Dopo Giuseppe Rossi, Federico Macheda, 16 anni da compiere il 22 agosto, trequartista romano degli Allievi della Lazio, sta per firmare un contratto di tre anni con i Red Devils.

Un anno fa un emissario del Manchester United arriva a Roma per vedere da vicino Alessandro Malomo, centrocampista allora biancoceleste poi passato alla Roma. E invece si innamora della fantasia e delle doti tecniche di Macheda. Da lì i primi contatti, sfociati in un'offerta ufficiale al ragazzo poco prima di Natale e confermata 20 giorni fa: triennale da 80 mila euro netti a stagione e — come da regolamento — trasferimento della famiglia in Inghilterra con tanto di posto di lavoro assicurato al padre e casa proprio vicino a quella di Rossi. Il ragazzo vacilla: l'offerta a tutta la famiglia è davvero difficile da rifiutare.

La Lazio ha in questo senso le mani legate dai regolamenti: Macheda non può firmare in Italia un contratto prima di aver compiuto 16 anni, cioè prima del 22 agosto. Delio Rossi l'ha anche inserito tra i convocati del ritiro austriaco che inizia domenica: nel ragazzo crede tanto e spera di vederlo all'opera con la prima squadra. Ma, salvo colpi di scena, Macheda a Kapfenberg non andrà.
