Veloso aims to impress

Veloso – who has a £10m get out clause – has already suggested he’d welcome a move to Old Trafford, where he could team up with compatriots Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.

He admits he can’t wait to take on United in the Champions’ League on Tuesday.

“The best game of my career so far was when we played Manchester United,” said Veloso.

“They are a great team and it is the dream of any footballer to play for such a club.”

Hoep he plays well (well...not tooo well) as alot of eyes will be on him during this fixture. I like the kid and I'll say again that I wouldnt mind it at all if he came over to our club.

Queiroz - Veloso not a priority
But United assistant confirms midfielder is on the list

Carlos Queiroz has confirmed Manchester United's interest in Miguel Veloso, but says signing the Sporting Lisbon midfielder is not a 'priority'.

Veloso has been tipped to follow former Sporting players Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani to Old Trafford after impressing in the UEFA Champions League this season.

The youngster's agent Paulo Barbosa told Sky Sports News last week that 'informal contact' had been made between the two clubs.

United's assistant manager Queiroz - a former coach of Sporting - acknowledged Veloso was among a string of Portuguese players the Premier League champions have been watching.

But Queiroz downplayed suggestions of an imminent deal for Veloso, saying the club are well stocked in the midfield department.

Ridiculous

"The scouting department is everywhere and it would be ridiculous to say that good players are not referenced," said Queiroz in Record.

"Miguel Veloso, Joao Moutinho, Quaresma, Bruno Alves, Bosingwa - all have been watched by us.

"Do we want to get these players? Of course, everyone does, however we can not work with 200 players!

"We have six players in Veloso's position, we signed Hargreaves this season and, at this point, he is not part of our options to buy as a priority."

Well mate you cannot just judge a player with one performance. Even Ronaldo wasn't judged on the basis of one performance (its a myth that we bought Ronaldo because of that game, SAF himself confirmed that Ronaldo was on our radar for 2 or so years). Veloso is definatley a young and upcoming prospect but at the moment we don't need him, however if we end up selling carrick (which i am against, unless the fee is 18 million) the this would be the player I would like to replace michael.

Quote:
Not only would he be the perfect back up for Evra
Are you serious, he has never played left back, what you are believeing is paper bullshit, I have been talking to sporting and portugal fans for years now and they confirm that he can only play DM and RB (occasionally).

Quote:
but lets just say we got him tomorrow, I'd push him in front of Fletcher
and Carrick on the midfield list...hell I'd put him at right back intead of Wes Brown.
Well all that just based on one game, Carrick is a very important player, just one bad game doesn't make him the worst signing on earth. Once again judge a player on his performance over a year or so, Carricks passing ability and vision are both sublime.

Quote:
on a side note: Send Carrick back to Spurs out of respect for Carrick. Out of respect for Berbatov as well since he needs a good midfielder to give him the ball.
Really? then why don't we just send ronaldo and rooney, tevez and others to their struggling team out of respect.

Default Lisbon anger over Veloso

Thats right United. Keep unsettling him, thereby driving up his price and pissing off Sporting even more.

Quote:

CRISTIANO Ronaldo has championed the quality of United target Miguel Veloso.

But the Reds are in trouble with Sporting Lisbon for going public with their interest in the 21-year-old Portuguese anchor man.

Sir Alex Ferguson's number two Carlos Queiroz admitted that Veloso was on Old Trafford's radar - but added that the player wasn't a priority.

But Sporting chairman Soares Franco hit out at Queiroz after United had beaten his side 2-1 in the Champions League.

Reprehensible

"It was ethically highly reprehensible," said Franco. "I was disappointed that Carlos Queiroz would talk directly about Miguel Veloso."

However, Lisbon coach Paulo Bento knows his club, who have already lost Ronaldo and Nani to the Reds for a combined fee of £30m, face a losing battle to hold onto Veloso, who is also interesting Real Madrid.

Ronaldo believes Veloso has the attributes to make it in one of Europe's big outfits.

"I don't know anything about us trying to sign Veloso but he is a great player," he says.

United's ex-Porto midfielder Anderson also paid tribute to Veloso.

"Miguel is a great player, everybody knows this. If he came to United he would be well received," says the Brazilian.

Veloso himself says he couldn't refuse a move to the Premiership if one arose.

"If a great offer came from England it would be impossible to turn it down, but for now my head is 100 per cent focussed on Sporting.

"Yet I'm not going to hide the fact that playing alongside Cristiano and Nani is one of my dreams."

i would be happy to take him but i read in a lot of places that the fee is now 20 mil, which is crazy.

it started of at 8, rose up to 10, then 12 and now 20!

its just shocking, where do they get these figures from?

if it is anywhere in that price range i think we really should opt not to buy because we have been taken to the cleaners a few times recently and we have huge debts already.

Default Queiroz hits back - United No. 2 slams Sporting chief

Man, this is getting real good. I still think United are going to have to pay the price for not being too diplomatic in the press about there desire for the lad.

Quote:

Carlos Queiroz has hit back at Sporting Lisbon president Filipe Soares Franco, claiming his criticism of the Manchester United assistant was borne of frustration.

Franco accused Queiroz of an 'unacceptable insinuation' after Sir Alex Ferguson's number two admitted an interest in upcoming Sporting midfielder Miguel Veloso.

United have already plucked Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani from Sporting after barely establishing themselves in the first team in Lisbon.

Veloso caught the eye in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash between the two clubs, when Ronaldo's late winner gave United a 2-1 win and prevented Sporting reaching the knock-out stages.

Anger

Queiroz angered Franco by revealing that United had already been watching the promising 21-year-old, with the Sporting chief insisting Veloso would only be sold if his £20million buy-out clause is met.

But the Portuguese coach had said Veloso was merely one of many to attract United's attention and believes Franco's comments were fuelled by Sporting's failure to progress.

"Mr Franco can't read or doesn't understand what I said," he told the Daily Mirror.

"He speaks because he knows I can't make direct contact to him in reply.

"His frustration from not seeing Sporting in the next stage of the Champions League has caused him to say what he has said."

Well he's a great player but do we really need him? Would he really join us knowing that we already have so many quality players? I think Fletcher could be utilized as a full back quite effectively!

wow what a fuss was around him. There's no chance United will get him, at least not now in January cause, Sir Alex already said he's not interested in signin him.We already have Hargo and Carrick..so we don't need Veloso, for now...
