personally i would look around and see if i could find who used it, or hand it over to police if some are around or just leave it somewhere that person will find it if they look for it. basically, i wouldnt keep it.

quality responses...if it was at a casino you could be arrested for it. I don't see why you couldn't at an ATM. It's still bank property.

I would leave it right where it is. First thing in my head would be "setup" and "the man" is trying to bring me down.

I've had situations happened like this before. One time I went and bought cds from a mom and pop electronics store. gave the cashier (who was a store co-owner) a 20... she gave me back 100. Looked at me and said "have a nice day". I looked at her if she was crazy and immediately told her what she did. She couldn't thank me enough. Her excuse was it was a busy day... As a result of my honesty, I get great discounts from said store now and they know me by name. In the end, it really isn't worth taking. I fully believe in karma and you reap what you sow.

karma is a rediculous argument. Karma could have just rewarded you for past deeds. Karma in my opinion is a creation by a leftist overly compassionate part of society to think that it's all about sacrificing instead of doing what is just. Karma does not equal justice and what I'm more concerned about is what is fair and what is unfair.


Taking money, should automatically come with guilt. If you need it so badly, that you are willing to steel then go for it, but for me, the only way i take that money is if it is going blow down the street carelessly, or if I see a homeless guy on the corner that I could give it to. Not because I feel that karma exists, but because I can't get in my car, and drive, or take a shower, or lay in bed, without my mind imploding with guilt from knowing that I've done something unethical and more importantly that I've compromised my principles for my financial gain.

funky, your example is a little bit different I think.

For me personally, if I found money lying on the street, or in the ATM (how that's possible, I don't know) but I would see if anyone in the vicinity had lost it, and I would give it back. Failing that, then yeaaaa baby, that money's mine.

In the example you gave, I would have done the same thing that you have, as I have done in the past. I guess that's because I've had family members who have worked at as a teller at a bank, and I know how strict they are with the teller's tray being even and how much trouble they can get in if it's grossly over/under what the actual amount should be, and I know it's like that in stores as well.

Take it back to the bank. That way if the person whom it belongs to comes in, then it could be sorted out there (though I don't know how they'd verify that).

It's not technically stealing if it just happens to be there, but banks can trace ATM transactions to see who was there last before you, and it really is different from a wad of $20s blowing down the street and landing at your feet.

Give it to the bank the next day. There are cameras everywhere and they could easily call it "theft".
