Talking Arnold: 'Marijuana is not a drug...it's a leaf'

'Marijuana is not a drug...it's a leaf', says Arnold Schwarzenegger

Quote:
Former Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger is facing a new row after claiming that marijuana is not a drug.
The Terminator star turned governor of the state of California, which was recently devastated by a spate of wild fires, admitted to smoking and inhaling the drug but insisted: 'I didn't take any drugs...it's a leaf'.

Schwarzenegger was pictured smoking it in his 70s bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron.

But in an interview with former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan, he told GQ magazine: "I didn't take any drugs."
But when told that he had admitted to smoking marijuana, Schwarzenegger replied: "That is not a drug. It's a leaf."
He added: "My drug was pumping iron, trust me."
The Terminator star also refused to condemn politicians who took class A drugs.

In a pointed reference to former US president Bill Clinton who claimed never to have inhaled, he said: "I did smoke a joint and I did inhale. The bottom line is that's what it was in the Seventies, that's what I did. I have never touched it since."

Mr Schwarzenegger said that it was not necessarily a matter of public interest whether politicians had taken class-A drugs.
"What would you rather have? A politician taking stuff and not saying, but making the best decisions and improving things?
"Or a politician who names all the drugs he or she has taken but makes lousy decisions for the country?" he asked. "A politician's job is to do what's best for the people and to improve the country, the economy, the environment. Why should I care if a politician takes sleeping pills every night so long as he can do his job?"
Schwarzenegger, who recently met with Tory leader David Cameron to discuss green issues, named former Prime Minister Tony Blair as one of the greatest leaders in history.
He included Blair in a list alongside Nelson Mandela, John F Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev.
Asked by interviewer Morgan if he would also rate current US President George Bush, the Republican governor replied: "I would say that I was... very fond of his father. I worked for President Bush Sr and he was a great man.
"I think his son does some great things and there are some other things I don't agree with."
Schwarzenegger is currently barred from standing for the presidency because he was not born in the US.
Asked if he would go for it were the law to be changed, he said: "Then I could think about it, yes. And go after it. I am always interested in challenges and risk."
