KEANO: TIMES UP FOR TIME WASTERS

The 36-year-old manager stamped his authority on the club club today by transfer-listing midfielder Liam Miller after he lost patience with his time-keeping.

Miller, 27, is understood to have been distraught by the decision, but Keane insisted that the former Manchester United player only has himself to blame after repeatedly turning up late for training.

Explaining his decision on the Black Cats' website today he said: "This is about time-keeping, it's nothing to do with talent.

"I've said that if you want to be a top footballer you need a lot more than talent and you certainly have to be on time for training.

"Liam has been late on a regular basis. If players cannot be on time then they haven't got a future at this club."

Miller is not the first man to encounter Keane’s wrath for lateness - Anthony Stokes, Tobias Hysen and Marton Fulop were famously left behind when they turned up late for the coach to Barnsley last season.

The 27-year-old is now one of seven players who have been told they can look for other clubs.

Keane added: “I have got a lot of time for Liam, but we set a very high standard at the football club and unfortunately, Liam has not been unable to match that, so we have put him on the transfer list and we will see what happens.”

keano really isnt someone you would want to get the wrong side of.

Sacked for being late sounds a bit harsh but perhaps he is trying to set an example at sunderland. Quite a few people have actually criticised his style saying it takes away the players' confidence but i suppose he has high standards and he must be ruthless if he is to improve the fortunes of the club in the long term.

An iron fist ruling is not going to get the best result. A manager has to get along with the players, to get to know them better, not only their skills. He has to understand the players in this kind of situation. I agree with DC: it's too harsh. He could have fined Miller. That would have been enough, I think.

I don't believe that Keano's a hard man to get along with...so long as you're following the rules. This is a man with a clear goal: Keep his side in the Premiership. He can't do that with players mucking about and showing no regard for protocol. He's sending a message not only to his current crop, but to all future players. "Follow our rules and live up to our standards or find another place to play your football. Whether that place is in the Premiership or not is none of my concern."
