Atletico Madrid midfielder Martin Petrov is reportedly close to a move to Tottenham.
Reports emanating from Spain claim Atletico have accepted an offer of nearly Ђ9million (Ј6million) for the Bulgarian international.
Petrov, who had played down talk of the move earlier in the summer, is now understood to be in London to discuss a deal.
It had previously been suggested that the 28-year-old was collecting interest from Manchester City manager Sven Goran Eriksson.
However, it is thought that Petrov would favour a move to Tottenham because of the attraction of playing Uefa Cup football next season.
The transfer would also allow Petrov, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, to link up with his Bulgaria team-mate Dimitar Berbatov.

Haha, my liking for them started last season with your countryman!
Petrov is a very talented player, but he tends to fall off when the team isn't playing well, or when goals are being leaked. Not what Spurs need since they leak goals by the googol already....

still i think their wing play will be very tough to defend against. They'll be very fast on counters now.
can we call them FC Bulgaria yet?

This is going to be a great pickup for the Spuds if this goes through.
They really have no excuses to not finish in the top 5... shoot, even top 4.
However, I have a question. Where are the Spuds getting all this money from? The new tv deal?

ummm carrick's sale, they have a pretty hefty support, tv deal and they do have some cash from UEFA. It adds up when you consider they haven't spent more than 2 million pounds on players for a while now.

Man City swoop for winger Petrov
Petrov is Eriksson's fourth signing for City
Manchester City have signed Bulgarian winger Martin Petrov for £4.7m from Atletico Madrid.
The 28-year-old has agreed a three-year contract and passed a medical, although the move is subject to a work permit.
Petrov was strongly linked with a move to Tottenham, but City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has made the Bulgarian his fourth new signing.
"Having Sven as manager proved to be a major factor in the player's decision," said City chief Alistair Mackintosh.
"Unsurprisingly given the calibre of the player, there were a significant number of clubs competing for Martin's signature, and I am absolutely delighted that he has come to Manchester City."
Petrov, a left winger, began his career at CSKA Sofia and enjoyed spells at Swiss club Servette and Wolfsburg in Germany before signing for Atletico in 2005.
However, the Spanish club have opted to cash in on Petrov after agreeing a £13.4m deal with Benfica for winger Simao Sabrosa.
Petrov has made more than 60 appearances for Bulgaria.
