Chelsea close in on Porto defender Jose Bosingwa.

Chelsea are close to a deal to sign Jose Bosingwa from Porto for a fee in the region of €20million (£15.8million). Bosingwa is a fast, overlapping right-back who has broken into the Portugal side in recent seasons and would be expected to replace Paulo Ferreira, his fellow countryman, as the first choice at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa have been tracking Bosingwa, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A deal could be announced on Monday, according to reports in Portugal. Bosingwa, 25, is expected to be offered a four or five-year contract.

Porto have been holding out for money because 20 per cent of the transfer fee needs to be paid to Rui Neno, an agent who owns a share of the player’s economic rights. Chelsea will need to take full control of the player to adhere to new Premier League rules against third-party ownership.

Bosingwa will play for Portugal in the European Championships next month, but was born in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He moved to Seia in central Portugal when he was young. He began his career mainly playing in midfield for Boavista, for whom he made more than 40 appearances. He also played as a right-back, winger and defensive midfield player.

He moved to FC Porto in 2003, where he played under Jose Mourinho, the former Chelsea manager. He was an unused substitute when FC Porto defeated Monaco 3-0 in the Champions League Final in 2004. He has been the club’s first choice right back for the past three seasons.

Three years ago, Bosingwa was involved in a serious car accident when his jeep skidded off the motorway and rolled down an embankment before bursting into flames. He was with four other players at the time, but all escaped alive. However, Sandro Luis had to have his left foot amputated as a result of the accident.

I think he is really a good player.. Bosingwa is 1st choise on right defence of Porto since 04/05..he is fast, agile, good tactical sense... and was recently called to the portuguese NT..For me he can be better than Miguel (Valencia), the other right defender of Portugal...and he is surely better than Paulo Ferreira (lol).

Is a name to not forget...i like his style.

Chelsea set to sign Bosingwa Chelsea set to sign Bosingwa

Chelsea have reached agreement with Porto over the transfer of defender Jose Bosingwa, the Premier League club said on Monday.

"The player is now in England to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical," a statement on Chelsea's Web site (www.chelseafc.com) said.

Porto said on their Web site (fcporto.pt) on Sunday that Chelsea would pay 20.5 million Euros (16.7 million pounds) for the 25-year-old Kinshasa-born Portugal international, regarded as one of the best right backs in Europe.

Premier League runners-up Chelsea have struggled at right back this season with Paulo Ferreira out of favour and Juliano Belletti making little impact since signing from Barcelona.

Manager Avram Grant has even used midfielder Michael Essien out of position on the right side of defence.

I think Chelsea are looking to neutralize another Portugese player of some reputation. Could GRant be having nightmares about a big number 7 coming down the wings? Chelsea could be tough next season, dependingon who is managing.

right back has definitely been a sore spot for Chelsea.

Only seen him play once. But from reading reports from the media and supporters, he seems like the real deal.

My interest now is where does Essien play? Chlesea had him slotted in the rightback position. Does this mean that Chelsea plays a 4-5-1, with the central midifielders Lampard, Essien, Ballack?

Anyways, Chelsea definitely isn't playing in the offseason.

United will have to move fast as this to me signals other teams are going to make moves very quickly.
