January transfer window - new striker? -
11-14-2007, 08:40 PM
Hope I've not posted in the wrong place, but I was wondering who you guys would like Sir Alex to bring in during the january transfer window.
I reckon we need a striker, midfield and defence seem covered, but if any of Rooney, Tevez or Saha got a long term injury we may struggle up front. We do have midfielders who could fill in temporarily but surely we need another out and out striker.
Defenders: I think the only weakness would be the lb position. With Tweety out due to injury, we have O'Shea and Simpson. Centrally, Pique, Evans, O'Shea. Rightside, Brown, Simpson, O'Shea, Fletcher (emergency only). (players listed after the assumed starters of Evra, Vidic, Rio and Neville)'
Midfielders: ummm... we are covered everywhere, extremely well. I'm saying this with Scholes and Park out. Nani and Anderson have been tremendous, I'll be the first to say that I have been shocked with there learning curve to the EPL game. I still get nightmares from Djemba Djemba.
Strikers: We need one that will accept the Ole role and can/will thrive. We have a pretty firm starting lineup with Rooney and Tevez, with Saha as the 3rd choice.
I really can't stress how much I DO NOT WANT Berbatov at the club. He won't accept anything below 2nd and he wont' be starting over Tevez.
I dont' see United spending after there summer signing extravaganza. Hargo 17 million, Nani 17 million after kickins and Anderson 17 million after kickins. Although the only "holes" would be in the striker/lb positions after the respective starters.

I have to agree with funkdoctorspock. No matter how "precosiously gifted" Berbatov may be, and how much the papers talk up such a move, he strikes me as someone who will not accept a rotational role.
Well Berbatov is a killer striker, he would do well at Old Trafford, but the problem is that Wazza gets injured a lot, 2 times just this season, and Carlos cant play alone, so we need smb a lot better than Saha. As much I hate to say that, the perfect left back for United would be Riise, he is a perfect example for a defender and can strike a ball realy well. In the midfiel we do not need assistence, but Giggsy and Scholsy do not get any yunger. We need smb who can tako over for Gary, Wes is a kickster and he spoiles the game very often, but some times he plays really great. As a centre back we have pique who will be the next Rio Ferdinand, and of course vidic who is a rock (and thats not just because he is a Serb)...
I also believe that we only need a striker but if we want to buy a superclass striker like berbatov we have to sell Saha. Then with 3 first team strikers we will be able to rest every game one of them.
What's the point of buying a striker if we're just going to sell one?
The point is that we're a bit light in the striker department, having only three. We need another striker or two imo, and as such selling one to get one is not that smart as we'd be back at three. What happens if we have three strikers and something happens similar to the start of the season where Rooney and Saha were both injured? We'd be stuck with one striker. We need another one or two quality strikers, but not Rooney/Tevez quality, more along the lines of Ole/Saha who are very good strikers, but who will be fine sitting on the bench the majority of the time.
what you guys are talking about are having a younger striker to fill in the gaps during injuries, which happens all too often. someone with speed and the ability to find and create runs. the man you're talking about is Pepe Rossi, but he's obviously not available. Lucky that we have Frazier Campbell....oh wait.

There is a reason I bleed red. United until I die.

This is what I was thinking. Campbell has done admirably at all his loan spells (21 goals in 30ish games at Antwerp and 3 in 6 at Hull already) and looked comfortable in his cap this season. Why spend another 15-20 mil on another striker who, as long as our current strikers stay healthy, will simply be in excess. We have 3 world class strikers and I've been looking to see Campbell increasingly (his loan spell is up mid January). We don't need another striker; look to the youth squads.
"Collar turned up, back straight, chest stuck out, he glided into the arena as if he owned the fucking place. Any arena, but nowhere more effectively than Old Trafford. This was his stage. He loved it, the crowd loved him" -Roy Keane on Eric Cantona
according to the people newspaper we will give Barca 5m plus Saha for Eto'o, would love it to be true but I find it near impossible to believe considering Eto'o is about 3 years younger and also world class.

Impossible that this is true. Eto'o is valued over 25 million pounds and his buyout is over 100 million euros
Secondly, why would Barca want Saha for? That isn't an upgrade in the striker department.
I call bollocks... link the source please.
