Default Gilberto coy on United link - 01-14-2008, 06:02 PM

I think I'm pretty hip when it comes to reading/hearing about United transfer targets. I think dtunam rules in this area, so maybe he can say something about this reported deal.

With that said, this is the first I'm hearing about this. An agreed deal for the summer? On a free? 31 years old? Doesn't Tweety play on the left in a backup role? What's going on here?

Quote:
Hertha Berlin's Gilberto has refused to reject speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.

German newspaper Bild am Sonntag claims that the Brazilian left-back's agent has negotiated a two-year deal with The Red Devils which will come into effect when the 31-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season.

And Gilberto has remained coy about the rumours, while confirming that he has received a number of offers.

Resolution

"I don't want to say much about it," Gilberto told the Bild am Sonntag.

"I have received many offers. I might stay in Berlin, but then again I might go to England, Portugal or back to Brazil."

Meanwhile, Hertha manager Dieter Hoeness is keen to quickly resolve the situation.

"His future is high on our list of priorities - whatever he may decide. We want him to extend his contract, but we can also live with a future without him," he added.

what damage can a free transfer be?

on the tweety issue, he admitted united tried to sell him a few times 1or 2 seasons ago to lyon and marseille. United agreed a deal but tweety wanted to stay till the end of his contract. Things might have changed but given he is another injury prone player on man united's pay roll, i doubt he will stay longer than his contract.

p/s i was scared there. Thought you mean the arsenal gilberto.

Without corroborating evidence from United, this seems more like a negotiating tactic from the player's agent to generate interest from elsewhere

yeah you're right, we've seen this so many times that it can't be discounted. Your comment becomes even more glaringly on point when you consider that united hardly have the policy of picking up such aging players to replace already ancient players. If anything we'd go to a 25 or 26 year old.
